SIXSHOT.COM INTERVIEWS
Sticky Fingaz - BacdafucupArticle by: Jon Michael From his groundbreaking debut Bacdafucup, with Onyx, to his critically acclaimed solo albums, Sticky has steadily provided the fans with raw, uncompromising hip-hop. It was no surprise when Sticky, with his huge presence in the rap game would take a stab at acting, co-starring in Clockers, with a then unknown Mekhi Phifer, as Scientific, a bloodthirsty drug dealer. More acting gigs would lead him to star as Blade, the vampire slayer immortalized in three extremely successful movies, in Spike TV’s first ever-original series. While Sticky garnered rave reviews for his portrayal of the half human, half vampire but the show would eventually be cancelled. Always one to stay busy, Sticky has a few movies coming out and is currently filming a pilot for A&E with Patrick Swayze. All you hardcore hip-hop heads, don’t fear, Sticky is coming with a new solo album, followed by an Onyx album. It looks like it’s going to be a good year Sticky Fingaz. Sup Sticky, what's good? Everything is good. Yo, I feel like you are one of the most underrated rappers ever. Do you feel like you don't get the proper respect as an MC? I get a lot of respect, but yeah...I can get more. And money to go with it! But that will all change when people see my movie A Day In The Life. People say you're the only MC who can outshine Eminem on a track. How do you feel about that and what is your relationship with Eminem like? I love Eminem. Hopefully we'll do some more work in the future. I give Eminem credit because I feel like he's the only person who gave a valiant fight on a record with me. I wrote my verse in one day and it took him 2 months to write a verse to come after mine. He could have done his in one day and made me last on the song, but he took time to do it right. Nobody ever wants to come after me on a record, and he did. Your two solo albums were hot and critically acclaimed. Why do you think they didn't blow up commercially? I didn't really like my second solo album Decade; I did it for the money. But Blacktrash was critically acclaimed and I put my total heart into it. All the marketing got fucked up. I broke my foot before I was supposed to go on tour, we had to push the release date and essentially it confused the public. The public still had no excuse though. All I can do is keep moving forward and put out another great album, and that one is called A Day In The Life. The Blade TV show was crazy, why did they cancel that? It cost too much money to film each episode. Since it was Spike TV's first originally series, they stepped out on a limb...and fell off the branch. But I still give them credit for even doing it in the first place. The whole series will be released as a DVD boxed set on February 12, 2008. The uncut & uncensored version of the first two episodes is available in stores now as a movie called Blade: House Of Chthon it's got a lot of bonus features. Go cop that. What made you get into acting? I went on an open call audition for Spike Lee's Clockers having no schooling in acting or anything and got the part. I figured I had something, so I just kept doing it. As a veteran in the game, how do you feel about hip-hop today? It needs Sticky Fingaz. Desperately. What projects do you have coming up, both on the music and the movie side? I fused my two loves; acting and music, into one project, A Day In The Life and it came out incredible. I wrote, directed and starred in two Hip Hop musical feature films through my production company, Major Independents. A Day In The Life will be in theaters next year from Lionsgate Films. It's crazy because there are A-List stars in there like Mekhi Phifer, Michael Rapaport, Ray J, Omar Epps, Clarence Williams III, Drena De Niro, Fredro Starr, Bokeem Woodbine, Malinda Williams, Kurupt, Faizon Love, Michael K. Williams and Tyrin Turner...all rapping. There's no 'regular' dialogue'. I just finished the follow up to that which is called Caught On Tape. That one is also a feature film done all in rap. It stars Vivica A. Fox, Keith Robinson, Cedric The Entertainer, Kel Mitchell, J. McCoy, Malik Yoba and Angie Stone! Of course I'm working on the soundtracks for both of those. On the music tip, I'm in the studio right now finishing up my third solo album. We're working on finishing an Onyx album next and I'm also developing my producer, Ess Man and hope to get a project out from him next year. I've made a documentary called How To Make A Major Independent Movie. It's to show people how movies are really made. I interview other actors and crew from all the shows and movies I've been on, also explain my struggle to make two Major Independent movies basically by myself. There are interviews on there with huge stars. You have to see it. That'll be out on DVD next year. There's also an Onyx DVD called 15 Years Of Videos, Violence and History. It's got all our Onyx and solo music videos, mad behind the scenes footage, commentaries from me and Fredro and a ton of other bonus features that all the Onyx fans are going to love. Right now I'm shooting a new pilot called The Beast for A&E. Patrick Swayze is in it with me! Anything you'd like to say to your fans at Sixshot.com? The future's a mystery, the past is history...but today is a gift. That's why it's called the present, so live for now. |
