Sixshot.com: Lets talk about what your definition of Hip-Hop is and how you feel in love with it? Kool Ace: hip hop TO ME is beats and rhymes mashed. I'm aware of the formal definition: the four pillars and all that. But as it applies to me THESE days beats and rhymes. Don't b-boy anymore, nor do I bomb. Still tag up a little bit though, get my groove on when I’m out. As an aside, I think it's worth going into what white America thinks hip hop is. Folks come up to me and ask me if I like rap OR hip hop all the time. That's like asking the hippie movement folks from the 60's whether they like "hippie" or "rock and roll". Hip Hop is a movement of urban culture, and RAP is the music of that movement. "Rap" (to me) is shorthand for "The music of the Hip Hop culture"... There it is. I fell in love with hip hop : A) when "Rock It" by Herbie Hancock came out, and B) when my sister introduced me to MC Ricky D and Dougie Fresh's "Ladi Dadi" and C) when "Colors" came out. Sixshot: Growing up in Indiana is not exactly Hip-Hop central how long you been in La and what brought you out here? Kool Ace: I've been out here since 2002. Me and my MaddWest partner Sammy Brazil came out here with a record deal from 2KSounds (EMI label). The label tanked a couple of months after the album dropped, so that was it. Sammy bounced back to Indiana and I decided to stay and try to get on as a producer. That's what I'm doing to this very damned day! To tell the truth, I shoulda moved to New York where I get love for my style of beats, but whatever the fuck. I guess you could say I've grown out here. Well, first of all, I feel blessed for my Indiana upbringing in that I was central to a lot of different rap forms.. I listened in equal measure to East, West and Down south (in the form of geto boys) rap coming up. I feel like I've developed a beat style that has represented all of this. Sixshot: What would say is one major difference in the producers of the past and the new blood of today’s producers? Kool Ace: I remember back in the day, and by THAT i mean around 88'-93 (the Golden Era), BITING WAS FORBIDDEN. It's funny, I could walk into a record store, close my eyes, and point at ANY tape (yes, tape!) in the VERY SMALL hip hop section and anything I picked would be not only dope, but ORIGINAL! Biting the style du jour these days is a virtue, not a vice! That's fucked up. Before corporate America got ahold of hip-hop, it was a very artistic and progressive musical form! It SUCKS that so many artists sound SO SIMILAR! That's why underground hip hop is so dope: Anything is possible! That Said, I think it's worth going into that fact that Sampling is considered cheating by some! WHAT?!?! Hip Hop was DEAD before breaks came in! Even when it was Sugar Hill gang, they replayed that Chic shit for "Rapper's Delight" which was essentially a sample! B-boying is short for Break_boying, and that means DJ's juggling breaks! Hip Hop has ALWAYS been about the breaks! ALWAYS! So dismissing sampling as not being hip hop is ludicrous! Samples were at the Alpha, and samples will be at the Omega! Thank God the breaks are coming back! Thanks 50 and Kanye! Sixshot: With all these cats making beats on Computers programming instead of hard machines and records would you say that takes away from the natural chemistry of Hip-Hop or is that just musical evolution evolving and if so what do you see in the future as far as making beats goes.......................???????????????????????? Kool Ace: Who can say? when I started back in '90, I never would have believed that computers were gonna play such a big part. Samplers only sampled like 12 seconds in Mono or some shit like that. God knows what they'll drop next.. some program that doesn't even use a human I guess. That would be the logical end to the mindless hip hop out there right now. I'm guessing sampling will fall out of favor again for a while, then come back. Everything is cyclical.. speaking of which, I think the single most important development in the music business is the emergence of the MP3 format. It really is going to make it a singles market again. Which means a) artists are going to be able to strike out on their own, and b) artists are going to have to come high in order to sell albums. Which is to say that people aren't going to buy whole albums unless they're bomb front to back. So I guess that the really important technology concerning hip hop is the digital media used to distribute it. That will play a more crucial role in the sound than the equipment used to produce it. Sixshot: If you had to describe your personality as piece of your equipment and yes you can only choose one which one would it be and why? Kool Ace: Why Because HANDS DOWN, the Roland MV-8000.. That is the DOPEST piece I have ever used. It has the best of all worlds, and allows me to be creative QUICKLY! Sixshot: What is your everyday Inspiration or force in star track terms that keeps you going on the daily grind or Beat? Kool Ace: My everyday inspiration is my pops. Unlike other parents, he fully supported my hip hop ambitions. Pops died of cancer about 8 months ago, so now I'm ripping it full force, I owe it to him! Sixshot: Speaking of beat when making one could you assimilate 4 basic words describing well say the beat "Pile Driver"? Kool Ace: Ruff Raw rugged and LOUD! Sixshot: In a time of crises because George bush the military has lowered there standard for getting in do you see this a negative and also what do you see for 2008? Kool Ace: FUCK GEORGE BUSH! I see the democratic leadership finally coming up and getting on! The GOP's lies are becoming obvious to EVERYONE! Sixshot: The Budgets for mainstream producers get bigger and bigger every year would you say the sampling world is getting taped out and if so is there anyone you consider untouchable or 2 sacred why them of course? Kool Ace: Sampling is back in a big way, and eventually it will die again. Budgets are getting smaller, but then again, labels are putting fewer artists out. It's a singles market again, due to MP3s (not to mention the majority of most albums suck!) and so they have more to spend on trifles like sample clearance. BUT: you better come correct and make a BOMB song if you use samples, cuz the industry is hurting! I think I read that The industry has lost around 8% a year for the last 6 years, so come correct if you use a loop! and try to clear that shit yourself, because the label will take it out of YOUR publishing if you don't!! Sixshot: Lets talk about when you were signed and what you learned from that life situation with maddwest? Kool Ace: yeah, that was in 2001, and it was a bust. We didn't read the contract at all, and we suffered for it! The label went down 2 months after our album came out, so we received no payment, no support, no nothing. Plus, the video that the label heads conceived was stupid and RACIST! we had no chance! Two Shaved headed white boys making fools of two brothers at a club! How brilliant! Sixshot: If Hip-hop was an animal would you say the true art form is an endangered spices , or just on the list , or almost extinct in our Musical jungle? Kool Ace: Well if you consider hip hop what it was in the Golden Era, I would say REAL endangered. Except for the undergrounds scene, I would say it's extinct, but we're holding on, and it will come around. I remember back in 92, things were looking kinda shiny and stupid, but then BLAAAAOOOOWWWWW! Wu Tang and Dre came out from each end of the country and changed shit up. I think we're due again, I just hope that I personally can be part of that next revolution! Sixshot: With Movies like hustle and flow coming out you can really see the commercialism in our culture I mean hell they named a car the Freestyle but if you could score for any director who would be your first choice? Dammm! Tarentino! I Guess? What’s your favorite movie By him? Kill Bill, cuz there's more of it and RZA did the soundtrack! Plus it was ill to see David carradine's old ass again. Sixshot: Anything you want to say to say to the readers b-fore we call it a Rap? Kool Ace: yeah, Hip Hop needs people that aren't afraid to push the envelope instead of clone. Don't be afraid, be yourself! The true spirit of Hip Hop is individuality, and push ing this music as far as we can! Peace to my homies as MVNation and Sub-One from Butterfly Toungz! God Bless my Pops! Hi Brooke! |
