Three Six Mafia Make History With Oscar Win

Last night (March 6) ,  Memphis collective Three 6 Mafia made hip hop history by being the first rap group and  the first African American group to win in the Best Song category.

 

The group wrote the track “It's Hard Out Here For A Pimp" which was performed by Terrence Howard in a scene from the movie Hustle & Flow

 

Earlier in the evening , the group performed the song live before accepting the award.

 

"I just couldn't believe it. I couldn't stand still," Jordan "Juicy J" Houston said backstage. "I had to run somewhere. I started to run somewhere. People thought the police was probably chasing me somewhere."

 

Terrence Howard was originally supposed to perfom the song but turned down the offfer. Actress Taraji P. Henson, who sang the hook in the movie,  sang alongside the group during their live perfomance
