John Legend - Evolver
Record Label: Sony Records Featured Artists: Andre 3000, Kanye West, Brandy, Estelle Article by: Serge Fleury John Legend’s typical recipe of relationships and heartbreaks are included in the album’s theme, with songs like ‘It’s Over’ (featuring Kanye West, as he continues his alter-ego as a poor man’s T-Pain), ‘Everybody Knows,’ ‘Quickly’ featuring Brandy, ‘This Time,’ and ‘I Love, You Love.’ But the soul man does manage to lighten up the mood a little with the faster-paced ‘Greenlight’ featuring the always-charismatic André 3000, “So I went hard like Medusa staring at me/I told her lets go, lets blow this lame n*gga factory/she said what kind of girl do you think I are/the kind that you meet in a bar/you think you can get whatever you want, cause you some kind of star.” Legend doubles his diversity by offering up a R&B/Reggae infused collaboration featuring his artist, the London-born American boy lover herself, Estelle. Even though the name of the album is called Evolver, remaining songs like ‘Satisfaction,’ ‘Take Me Away,’ and ‘Good Morning’ sound like material that could’ve been on his previous efforts. With that said, John Legend’s Evolver is still a good album to add to your library if you’re a fan, but none of the contributions seem to possess that feeling of being a standout or breakaway success like his prior work did. |
