SIXSHOT.COM INTERVIEWS
Yung Berg - Young Boss
Article by: Jon Michael

It’s been a long road for Yung Berg in this crazy music business. He’s been signed to DMX and his Bloodline Records as a teenager. He’s been shipped off to boot camp by his parents. In short, he’s been living the life of an aspiring MC.

The difference between him and most is that he’s starting to see the light at the end of that long tunnel. After his song “Sexy Lady” propelled him into the proper position it was only a matter of time before Yung Berg took his rightful spot in the rap game.

Now with a platinum plaque for “Sexy Can I”, his own label through Epic Records, and an album on the way, it’s safe to say that Yung Berg has finally made it. Sixshot.com caught up with the Chicago native to discuss signing with DMX, living in Cali, and of course, the infamous situation with Flo-Rida and Brisco.

You were signed to DMX and his Bloodline record label when you were real young. How did that come about?

When I signed to DMX I had came out here to California to really try and get my shit poppin’. I went to the “What These Bitches Want” video shoot. I spit for DMX and his crew and he said he was gonna sign me. It wasn’t gonna be today and it wasn’t gonna be tomorrow but he said he was gonna sign me and he lived up to his word.

I know Bloodline folded so when that happened what was your game plan?

My parents shipped me off to boot camp so I went to boot camp and when I got out I went out to L.A. I was working with my big sister Eve and just really trying to get shit poppin’. I put out “Sexy Lady” to the streets in Cali and that’s how it went down.

So that song really got a lot of attention for you then?

Oh yeah definitely, that song did a lot for me man.

“Sexy Can I” is huge right now. Did you think it was going to be this big?

I really didn’t know because you never really know but I'm ecstatic about it. I just got my platinum plaque yesterday at my video shoot so I’m real excited about it.

As a newer artist coming into the game do you have any feelings about how CD sales are down and everything?

Not really because I feel that as long as you continue to put out great music then you’ll be successful. As far as the ringtone craze and the whole internet situation, it’s not really affecting me because I sold millions of ringtones and we got a million downloads for “Sexy Can I”. It’s all good.

Do you feel it was necessary to leave Chicago to really make moves in the industry since Chicago doesn’t really have a major label presence?

There’s definitely not a lot of opportunity in Chicago and Chicago is the city that loves to hate. I had to branch off and go somewhere else just to establish myself.

There’s a bunch of videos floating around the internet regarding the comments you made about Flo-Rida and all that. What’s really going on?

I mean I’m from Chicago man. Niggas talk the dozens and niggas talk shit. When I said what I said about Flo-Rida it’s not like I called him a bitch or a fag or said his music was wack. All I said was that my album got pushed back like his hairline. I didn’t think that comment would be taken so much to heart.

I know Brisco and I guess Bris got some problems with me now but coincidentally I been staying at the same hotel as Flo-Rida for the last 3 or 4 days and him and my people been talkin’ and it’s all love, know what I’m sayin’? It ain’t no disrespect to the big homey but as far as Brisco I just think it’s kinda corny considering I did a song with you and you know Lil Wayne has my number.

If you really had a problem with me like that, to that point then why would you go straight to the internet with it? He said he’s gonna beat my ass and all that instead of coming at me like a man. But if that’s the case then thanks to Brisco for the heads up because when I do come to your city I’m gonna have my right security and my Haitian dudes and I’m gonna make sure I roll correct when I’m there.

So you think it was all just a publicity stunt?

I don’t know, you tell me. If you had a problem with another man wouldn’t you try and get at him to see what the problem is or would you throw a camera in your face and get on the internet? It’s just stupid. My whole thing is like I would never do that if I was beefing with somebody because if something happens to me or happens to Brisco then it’s all out there. This dude is threatening me on the internet.

You have a joint venture. Is it with Epic or Koch?

Yeah I have my own label. The joint venture is with Epic but after I signed my deal Epic partnered up with Koch for my radio promotion.

How does it feel to have both the independents and the majors on your side?

If feels good when everything is working right and right now everything is working right so I have no complaints. At times it felt crazy because it was a lot of cooks in the kitchen but we all on the same page now and it’s all good.

What can we expect from the album?

Expect a lot of versatility. Rob Holiday and me produced every track except two on the whole album. Expect appearances by Trey Songz, Lloyd, Amerie, Eve, and my own artists as well.

Is putting out other artists something you enjoy?

Definitely, because I get to live my dreams through someone else and I get to help somebody with their dream. It feels great that I’m able to help somebody out.

How far do you see your label going in this business?

To the top man. I’m in it to win it baby.

Do you ever look at Rocafella, Shady and the other successful labels to kind of guide you?

Definitely, I was blessed to be able to be around dudes like DMX and Jay-Z when Rocafella was really at the forefront and I took all that information and I really apply what I learned and apply it for where I’m at in my career right now.

Would you like to blow up another hip-hop artist?

Definitely, I got my big brother Cap.1 and he’s on my label. We’re working on his project right now. I definitely wanna blow up another rap artist but I’m solidifying my situation right now.

Do you have any predictions about your album sales?

I don’t really have any predictions. I just want people to listen to it and I know you’ll know what it is. I don’t wanna jinx myself by saying I’m gonna sell a million the first week or some shit because that’s just not healthy for my situation right now.

Aight man, give us the rundown on what’s we can check for man.

Check me out man, I’m all over the net dropping videos every day. We just shot the video for “Tha Bizness”, my first single off the album and the street single “Do That Thing” is buzzin’ in the clubs. We just doin’ it big this year man so keep your eyes open for the album and everything baby.

Anything you wanna say to the Yung Berg fans out there?

Just stay focused and keep watching me because I’m gonna take you to the top and show you how to be a young boss.
