Two Florida men and a woman who operated a hip hop pirate radio station which authorities claim 'glorified and glamorized gangster activity’ were reportedly arrested yesterday (January 11).

According to The Orlando Sentinel, Wesley C. Williams Jr. , Jimessia Spillman and Calvin Thompson were each arrested and charged Friday with one count of unauthorized transmission/interference with a licensed radio station, which is a third-degree felony.

Authorities revealed that Thompson was the operator while Williams Jr. worked as the station's main disc jockey.  Spillman operated the station during the men's absence.

“This illegal FM radio station broadcasted 'gangsta rap' with violently offensive language,”  Sheriff Grady Judd told The Sentinel.  “We believe one purpose of this station was to glamorize and encourage criminal gangster activity.”

Judd revealed that his office worked in partnership with the State Attorney's Office and Federal Communications Commission to shut down the station.

According to the Florida Association of Broadcasters, nine to 20 illegal broadcasts take place on any given day in Florida.  The state has been playfully dubbed as “the pirate radio capital of the United States.”
