Legendary DJ/Producer Marley Marl recently shot down reports that Mississippi rapper David Banner and Oscar winning actor Cuba Gooding Jr. will be playing members of the celebrated New York rap collective The Juice Crew in the upcoming independent film based on the rap crew called The Vapors.
The Juice Crew was formed in the mid 80’s by Mr. Magic and DJ Marley Marl and its other members included Biz Markie, Big Daddy Kane, Roxanne Shanté, MC Shan, Craig G, Tragedy Khadafi, Kool G Rap & DJ Polo, Masta Ace, TJ Swan and Cool V.
Late last year, Blackfilm.com reported that Banner would play Biz Markie, Cuba would play Marley Marl and actress Keke Palmer would play Roxanne Shanté. Other actors named included Evan Ross as MC Shan, Jackie Long as Big Daddy Kane and Clifton Powell as Mr. Magic.
Marley Marl, who will be executive producing the flick, revealed to MTV News that no definite cast has been chosen yet.
“Right now, it's
in the casting stage,” explained Marley Marl. “We're not reaching out — a lot of stars are reaching out to us because that's an important movie in hip-hop history. It’s basically me, Big Daddy Kane and Biz's life story leading up to 1988. How we got there. How we made the golden era pop. A lot of ups and downs, a lot of personal sh--.”
“We gonna tally it up at the end and see who it could be,” he added referring to the cast.“ We need the movie Vapors to make its point, and a lot of the young kids to know what birthed the golden era.”
According to Marley, The Vapors will hit screens this year and will be directed by Furqaan Clover.
“It's moving very, very quickly. They got the investors. This is something that everybody's excited about, and it should be one of the pinnacle [hip-hop] movies,” Marley said. “ You got Scarface, Krush Groove, whatever in your [DVD] rack, [you'll eventually] have Vapors.”
