Fans who had anticipated a performance by Lil Wayne at New Hanover High School's Brogden Hall yesterday (October 21) reportedly rushed the stage after its was revealed the New Orleans rapper had pulled a no-show.

The Wilmington Star reports that after it was announced that Wayne would not be taking the stage, fans pushed over a security barrier and rushed towards the stage.

The rush would be repelled by New Hanover County deputies who had positioned  themselves in front of the stage prior to the announcement.

“He's truly lost a fan,” said 19 year old Wilmington native Everette Grimes, after cursing about the concert's cancellation. “He'll never have to worry about me supporting anything he does again.”

“We've been standing out here since . . . 5:00 o'clock,” said Samantha Allred. “I'm tired, hungry and my feet hurt.”

Last month, the school board for Hanover High School pulled the plug on an October 15 performance by Wayne because of safety concerns. The board feared gang activity would take place at the event and  members of the community pointed out Wayne’s criminal record and injuries caused by his onstage antics.

After conferring with Wilmington police and the New Hanover Sheriff’s office, the s chool board announced last week that it had reversed its decision and would be allowing the rapper to perform.

During a press conference Friday(October 19), New Hanover County Sheriff Sid Causey assured community leaders that security measures would be taken including having everyone entering the venue searched and heavy police presence.

Promoter Alonza Mitchell, who made the announcement that Wayne would not be appearing, told the crowd that they could get refunds from the outlets where they purchased their tickets. He would also urge the crowd to calm down and head home peacefully.

Over 4000 fans were expected at the venue but only 1000 had filled the hall minutes after the show was kicked off by opening acts at 7pm.

Word that Lil Wayne wasn’t going to be showing up began circulating around 9:30 p.m. and the official announcement was made around 10 p.m.

“I can't even believe that they would let us sit out there that long knowing Wayne wasn't going to perform,” said Teresa Lamastro, a mother of two. “I spent my last $120 so me and my girls could see the show. I haven't eaten since 2 p.m. because we wanted to be first in line to see Wayne.”

Calls made to the show’s promoters to explain why Wayne didn’t show up were not returned.

North Carolina’s NewsChannel 3 reports that various sources claim Wayne did not take the stage because 'he wasn’t happy with the turnout and that the concert had not generated enough money'.
