Hip hop mogul Master P will be bringing a documentary about New Orleans residents who were displaced by Hurricane Katrina to the big screen.

The documentary, titled Desert Bayou,  focuses on a group of Katrina victims who were transferred to Salt Lake City and held at a military base.

Master P, whose real name is Percy Miller ,produced the movie along with Jimmy Finkl.

Desert Bayou has received support from the NAACP as well as Rev. Al Sharpton with other important figures in the movie industry.

During its premiere week in New York, Desert Bayou had the 2nd highest per-screen average gross just below The Kingdom. The film had the 6th highest per-screen average gross of all films nationwide.

The documentary also received a proclamation from the city of New York. October 5th was declared ‘Desert Bayou Day’ in recognition of the humanitarian cause the film takes on for the people of New Orleans.

Word is the movie will be up for nomination in ‘Best Documentary’ category at the upcoming Oscars

"This movie is growing quickly and it should be in all theatres for everyone to see," Master P said in a statement." This the most passionate I've ever been about a film. I'm also going to reach out to my good friend Mark Cuban to get this film into all his Landmark Theatres as well as my friend Magic Johnson to get the film into all of his theatres, too.'

The profit made from the movie will be going towards rebuilding minority housing in the city of New Orleans.

The film is distributed through Cinema Libre Studio and is a Processing Productions movie in association with Take A Stand Films.
