Murphy Lee was arrested after police pulled him over for an expired license plate and found marijuana in his Mercedes, authorities said.

Lee, born Tohri Harper, was stopped Oct. 31 on Interstate 55 south of St. Louis. Sheriff's deputies allegedly smelled marijuana, and the 22-year-old Lee was arrested on charges that he had less than 35 grams of marijuana and was driving under the influence of drugs.

Lee's attorney, Scott Rosenblum, declined to discuss the charges Monday, saying only that Lee expects to plead not guilty during a court appearance next month.

As previously reported , Murphy recently enrolled himself at Southeast Missouri State University to gain a to pursue a business degree. He is taking nine credit hours during the fall semester. He is also working on the follow up to his debut album, Murphy’s Law.
