DJ Premier: 'I Wish Nas Could Make An Album With The Original Team, He Would Be Over Successful' printer friendly version Send this story to a friend!

Nas fans aren't the only ones who wish the Queens rapper would reconnect with all the producers who helped put together his classic debut album Illmatic.

In a recent interview with Goods Magazine, DJ Premier revealed that he would like to link up with Nas and the other producers who worked on Illmatic for a new album.

"I wish Nas would do an album again with just the original team,' said Primo."Me, Q-Tip, Large Professor, Pete Rock and L.E.S. We all went in like we knew we had to."

"I remember Tip bringing me 'One Love' and I was like 'Damn, I had to go and fix mine'.  I had to change my 'Represent' beat just to compete with them," Primo reminisced.  "Pete played me 'The World Is Yours' before the beat was done and I was like 'Yo, I gotta make another banger' and that’s when I did 'New York State Of Mind'.

"Large Pro was really the originator of Nas' style musically because he took a chance on him, so Large Pro is really the important factor of Nas' career," Primo continued.  "So I don’t know how you don't go back to Large.  If Nas would g et to do one album with all of us again it would be over successful because we all gonna come with it."

Premier's production has been absent from Nas' and Jay-Z's projects in the past years.  Primo claims he has sent beats to both rappers but they never make the final product.  Despite being turned down, Primo has no ill feelings towards them.

"I'm not bitter, my main thing is just let me know you're not gonna use it. That gets me a little bothered because if you know me just say 'It ain't it Preem'.  I'm cool," he explained.  "I pee standing up, I’m all man so I’m not gonna get sensitive about that. Those are my dudes".

I just hate when people say things that are false, Illmatic didnt have a feature uh yes it did dude have you ever heard of life`s a bitch featuring Az....Duh come on man dont post false shit. And one guest appearance on a 10 track ablum is no that good shit biggie had 1 guest appearance on a 16 track album....Those both r the best hip hop albums in my perspective. But dont say its the only hip hop album without a feauture because thats a lie.

Illmatic And The Chronic
We can`t go back to the years and circumstances of Illmatic or Chronic. Like Nas said, "always movin` forward, never goin` back". Just like the WuTang Clan could never form as a unit and dominate like they did back then. Circumstances change, money changes, people change, location, emotionals, creativity, and outlooks change. The Chronic, Illmatic, and 36 Chambers were real hood music from real hood dudes. In other words, you had to be a real west coast dude to fully understand The Chronic. Yea, we liked the Chronic on the East side, but West side cats really was feelin it moreso. It`s alright to do a song here and there with "them old cats (and teams)". But life moves on. Jay Z said it best, "Nas` music got better after Jay Z dissed him". In other words, something in the Present motivated Nas to "step his game up". Usually when "past crews" get back together, the "look" or "formula" never works. It looks weak or sad, like when Curtis Blow rapped and "break danced" on the Apollo (a few years ago). Snoop Dog is still relative because he never lost that hood mentality and hood look. Snoop had good days and bad days, but most cats still view Snoop as a hood dude. Nas is better off staying current with current beat productions. Any attempts to do another type of "Illmatic" wouldn`t work. Dre could definitely sell another platinum piece, but even that Great Doctor, could never rep on another "Chronic". Dre could provide the music for a newer artist on the hood level, but Dre (or Dre with Snoop) couldn`t do it again. Chronic was that "young hood music". Them dudes is too old to do that now. Wu Tang will always be classic. But most of them dudes don`t even get along no more. The vision is lost. The unity aint there. It would just be dudes rhyming to beats. There would be no chemistry. And the hood would be said, because "that" would be a desecration of the Wu (hood unity). It`s 2009. Let`s see the "newer" cats and fly producers make new classics!

If the formula works don`t fuck wit it
I have to agree with Primo...Nas would definitley be larger that he is now with the Original team. Illmatic is the only album in hip hop history to have no featured artists and he blew up w/o any outside influence. Nas can do it again...I believe that. The only thing is once you go Hollywood, the hood is the last thing on your mind. He has been a major influence to my style and creativity because he choose to dig deeper than any other artist that I have ever heard. Nas...do the right thing like Spkie Lee and put hip hop in its place and do collabs with the ones who are equal to you...Immortal Technique, chino XL, AZ...just to name a few
