A South African man who caused an accident that killed Ashanti's cousin during the singer's 2006 visit in the African country will be re-tried after the second judge in the case rejected a sentence negotiated by the prosecution and defense teams.
In April 2006, South African native Kershan Naidoo stole his mother's car and crashed into the back of a car carrying Ashanti's 26-year-old cousin Quinshae Snead.
The impact of the crash flung Snead from the vehicle she was in and another car drove over her. Another person was also killed as a result of the crash.
Naidoo, who was seventeen at the time of the accident, was not a licensed driver and was under the influence of alcohol.
According to The Times, the prosecution and the defense agreed Wednesday (August 20) that Naidoo should do two years behind bars but Magistrate George Andrews called their agreement “unjust”.
The first judge to hear the case also refused a similar agreement made by the prosecution and the defense.
“Two innocent people were killed because of the accused’s extreme and reckless driving,” said Andrews.
Andrews suggested that Naiddo should get eight years behind bars with three years conditionally suspended.
N
aidoo’s re-trial is expected to take place next month.
