An Alabama nightclub and 700 of its patrons were reportedly duped this past weekend by promoters who faked a Lil Wayne performance at the venue.
According to NBC 15, managers at Club Illusions claim that a man who identified himself as Tony Lee signed a contract with the nightspot to rent out the venue for a performance by Lil Wayne this past Saturday (June 21).
Lee claimed to be representative for Coastal Boy Entertainment and had an associate who was not identified.
On Saturday night, seven hundred people packed the club and at around 1 am, security confronted Lee about Lil Wayne not showing up.
Lee would assure security that Lil Wayne was on his way and when the crowd began to get antsy, Lee and his associate made their escape with around $45,000.
“We got scammed real bad,” said Esa Jones, the club's manager. “It looked planned, they printed tickets, had radio advertisements, ticket locations, it looks so legit.”
The club's surveillance video showed Lee and his associate emptying the cash box before their escape. Authorities are investigating the case and are searching for Lee and his associate.
The club revealed that they will not be giving back any
refunds but they will be holding free customer appreciation concerts to make it up to its patrons.
