A report by thesmokinggun.com claims that R&B crooner Akon has fabricated the criminal past that he mentions in his music and interviews.

Akon has claimed to have spent more than four years in prison for crimes which included being the leader of major car-theft ring.

Smoking Gun, which recently exposed The Los Angeles Times for using false information supplied by inmate  about Tupac Shakur's  1994 shooting, claims that Akon has only been convicted for gun possession during his six arrests.

The site also claims Akon was arrested in 1998 for being in possession of a stolen BMW but was only incarcerated for several months and the charges were dropped.

Representatives for Akon’s label, Universal Motown, refused to comment.
