The South has a stronghold on the music industry and if Green City has anything to say about it, it’s going to stay that way. Hailing from Central Texas this group has been on the grind for some time. From mixtapes to shows the group has done it all and it finally paid off when they were discovered by legendary lyricist Scarface.
Since then they’ve won awards, been featured in major publications, and built their buzz to an all time high. Now with their official single “Do It Like I Done It” hitting the airwaves and their official album Brand New Money on the shelves, the Green City movement is in full effect.
Sixshot.com caught up with the Scarface protégés to discuss Central Texas, hooking up with Scarface, and working with Mannie Fresh.
Sup fellas, what's good?
Spark: GOD that's what's good plus this dro I be smoking. That shit be good too ya dig? (Laughs)
Aight so how did Green City start?
Spark: I can't really answer that question because I'm actually one of the last members to join Greencity. You’d probably be better off asking my homie MJ or something.
Describe to us the Green city movement as far as the group, the label et
c.
Spark: The movement is huge. We were hand picked by the legendary Scarface himself to introduce the official new sound of Texas music plus we got other rappers reppin’ Greencity in other regions like my homie Kaizer Sosa out there in Cali reppin' Greencity West but it ain't all about rap wit us. We got Greencity niggas that don't rap at all ya dig? This Greencity shit more like a family fa sho.
MJ: The Greencity movement as far as the group, we are down to me MJ, Spark, and Mike Hee and Yung Texx holdin’ it down anticipating J. Scott and Big Spades release.
What would you guys say each of you brings to the table musically?
Spark: As far as myself, Spark aka Spark Dawg, I like to call myself the "X-Factor" of the group. I'm the grinder. I'm the one that goes out there and hits the road and puts this Greencity shit in niggas faces. A lot of people mistake me for the "leader" of the Greencity but that's a title I never asked for. All I'm tryna do is show the world that there’s supa talent in my city and so far I think I've done that.
MJ: Well I like to flip on a track and I also can slow it down so you can hear the lyrics.
What was it like working with Mannie Fresh?
Spark: It was amazing! He's so spontaneous. I never expected him to just come in the studio and attack the booth the way he did. Honestly, I didn't even know he was supposed to be jumping on that "Like A Pornstar" record at first. I thought he was just stopping by to see how our recording session was going. Then next thing you know he's in the booth yelling "Party Like A Rockstar/Bang'em Like A Pornstar!" (Laughs)
MJ: It was a blessing working Mannie. He is a very talented man when it comes to tracks.
How did you guys get the co-sign from Scarface and what is your relationship with him like?
Spark: Its not like we mailed him a demo or set up a meeting or anything. Face actually heard our music while he was working out in the gym one day. He tracked us down and immediately offered us a deal. As far as our relationship, it’s a beautiful business relationship. You can't get too personal in this music business. That's how you end up getting fucked and I'm a man so I don't get fucked I do the fuckin’, ya dig? (Laughs)
MJ: Scarface found us; he happened to be working out at a gym a couple of my homeboys that are in to boxing were at. They were playing our classic album " First You Get The Money" and then it was a rap.
Do you feel like your co-sign from Face is helping you in the game?
Spark: Hell yea! 3 months after hooking up with Uncle Face we were in The Source magazine. A month later we were in XXL. A few months later we (Greencity) were nominated for an Ozone Award! I can't complain at all mayne.
I heard a rumor you guys has some kind of connection with the Hypnotize Minds camp. What is your relationship with them?
Spark: I don't personally have a relationship with them because I don't know them like that but one of our main graphic designers handles a lot of their online graphic work as well I believe. Oh yeah shout out to my homie DJ Black, 3-6 Mafia's tour DJ, that's my homie for real though.
How are you guys different from other artists and groups from the South?
Spark: We're different because every single member of Greencity can go off and have a successful solo career after this group album drops because we're all solo stars.
MJ: We all got versatile flows.
Tell us about Scarface Presents Green City, Brand New Money.
Spark: The album is supa throwed! Every track is a banger but my personal favorite track off the album is probably a record I wrote the hook on called "I Gotta Shine." Its basically talks about all the struggles you have to go through in order to shine ya dig? You gotta grind before you shine and that's an important message we're tryna get across on that record. It’s a real powerful song.
MJ: I believe it’s going to be one of the best rookie albums.
You guys work with a lot of very established artists in the game. Is that helping you in the industry?
Spark: It definitely helps because we've made the transition from being fans of these established artists to actually becoming peers of these artists. Me personally, I've done tracks with everybody from Mistah Fab, to Smitty, to Diamond from Crime Mob, Lil Scrappy, Trae, Short Dawg, Crooked I, TumTum, etc. I mean the list goes on and on. My feature catalog is deep as hell and I'm just getting started mayne.
MJ: Yeah it always helps.
Green City has been hitting the mixtapes hard as well, has that helped you a lot?
Spark: Of course it helped. Mixtapes feed the streets until the official album drops so I'm 100% down with all the DJs that drop mixtapes featuring Greencity and myself, ya dig?
MJ: Yeah they’ve been a big help to us.
You have a DVD as well right? Tell us about that.
Spark: The DVD will give people a better understanding of what Central Texas is all about. This is an untapped resource and now we have the resources to showcase our city and our lifestyle to the whole world.
What can we expect to see from Green City in the future?
Spark: You can expect to see solo albums from the whole fam and me. This group album is the stepping stone we all needed so we can launch our careers and monopolize the entire Texas market.
Anything you want to tell the fans out there?
Spark: Scarface presents Greencity "Brand New Money" in stores now! Be on the lookout for Team Spark-A-Lot. Free Big Spade, J.Scott, Bill Bill, and JP! We gonna hold it down and make the whole world respect Killeen, Tx! And make sure yall hit up my myspace. I love my fans & supporters! www.myspace.com/DaLoneStarKid
