For the past two years, Glasses Malone's name has been synonymous with the West Coast rap scene. In 2005, the Watts rapper's buzz from his mixtapes sparked a bidding war between various major labels and he decided to go with Sony Records who offered him a 1.7 million deal.
Unfortunately, the relationship between G. Malone and Sony didn’t work out as planned, forcing the rapper to cut ties with the label. Many felt the loss of the deal was a setback for the Watts emcee but he got back to grinding releasing two projects, White Lightning and The Electric Chair, which only helped strengthen his buzz.
Thanks to his ability to stay on course, another deal would present itself. This time he would enter a joint venture with West Coast legend Mack 10’s Hoo Bangin’ imprint and Cash Money Records, not to mention his own independent distribution deal through Universal Records.
Malone is now putting together his major debut album Beach Cruiser and has his eyes set on bringing the West Coast back to dominance.
So what's your label situation as of now? I've been hearing a lot of different things.
Currently I'm signed to Hoo Bangin/Cash Money Records. It's a joi
nt venture between Mack 10 and Baby and Slim.
Your deal with Sony, how did you manage to swing a 1.7 million dollar deal at a time when the music industry is lagging in sales?
God Blessings! A combination of preparation meeting opportunity. Mike Lynn recognize the talent and hustle and compensating me for it!
Unlike a lot of rappers from Cali, you don't glorify gangbanging, why is that?
Because it’s some ignorant shit! I wouldn't want anyone else to follow that bad example! People die everyday for no dam reason fuckin' with gang banging'!
How do you feel about West Coast music today?
I love it! Most people don't get to enjoy the majority of West Coast music. Most of the world only gets to enjoy Game, Snoop, and maybe Crooked I via the internet! I get to hear Bishop Lamont, Roccett, Mykestro, Problem, Taje, and a host of other West Coast emcees who are all on the rise!
Do you feel the West Coast can go back to success it once had?
Of course. Ice Cube and E-40 both received gold plaques. Game and Snoop both got platinum plaques. It’s our time! Right now!
Where do you feel your part is in the new West Coast movement?
I am the President! One of the main forces in it! Its something I represent to the fullest
White Lightning and The Electric Chair did really well, were you happy with the response?
Happy doesn't describe how I felt. More like ecstatic! I just wanted to show my album crafting capabilities. Not to mention showcase how magnificent the other Blu Division artist talents are. Now the music world has a small taste of what this movement can really do.
Your record with Akon, "Certfied", is bubbling right now. How did you two get up to make that record?
Kon just a real guy. A couple of my homeboys from out West let him know a real L.A. nigga was down in the ATL! He reached out and told me he was on his way! He came down in his lambo, shook my hand, and we cut a couple records. Viola! That simple! Dude just a real nigga like that!
Your mom is doing some serious time, is that hard for you to deal with?
Very hard for me to deal with! She was my number one supporter, right now its hard just talking to her. I feel so helpless in that situation!
What can we expect from Beach Cruiser and what other projects do you have lined up?
Expect a great L.P. I worked my ass off! Don't expect perfection, but expect one helical album! I got 3 more L.P.s after Beach Cruiser that I'll I release on Blu Division (my indie label at Universal), a street race DVD with a possible drag race reality show I wrote myself. After that its different business ventures. Producing movies, open a couple clubs, and buying real estate.
