Scram Jones is a triple threat wearing three hats as a DJ, MC and, most notably, producer.  Born and raised in New Rochelle, NY, Scram began honing his musical talent at an early age by playing different instruments. In 1999, he released his first record "Liquid Heat", gaining underground buzz. In 2000, he helped start the first weekly open mic show in NYC called "End of the Weak" where he would perform on stage weekly djing and mcing.

In 2002, after reaching the finals of The Source battle, Scram was awarded a coveted feature in The Source’s 'Unsigned Hype' when it still meant something. Scram since then appeared on several platinum albums such as Lloyd Banks’ album Hunger For More, Biggie's Duets album, and most impressively Mariah Carey's multi-platinum album The Emancipation of Mimi which was the most successful selling album of 2005 selling almost 10 million worldwide.

Sixshot.com sat down with Scram to discuss his production company Beast Music and his upcoming projects.

Scram, you do it all, spin, produce, and rhyme. Do you enjoy one more than the other?

I probably enjoy messing with the turntables the most honestly , scratching and cutting shit up but I equally enjoy writing and of course making beats is my life.

Take us through the creative process on "Liquid Heat"

(Laughs) Shit, that was back in ‘99 when I first started recording myself rapping. It was my first real record I recorded and I tried to go super hard with the punch lines. Almost too hard! I didn’t really have the greatest flow but it was when I thought it was all about what you said, not how it sounded! Shit, I tried to jam a punch line in every bar. It was also one of my first beats that I ever made and it showcased my scratching abilities too.

You've won multiple DJ competitions. Is competition a big part of DJ'ing?

Yeah, definitely, but nowadays these DJS are more concerned with exclusive records than exclusive scratches but battles are still good because regardless if you want to win it’s an opportunity to showcase your skills and show people your creativity.

Do you feel DJ's today are lacking skills?

Hell yeah, I mean the ones in the battles are ill but most of the radio and mixtape DJ'S don’t know what to do on the turntables. They might know what to play but they don’t know how to use the turntables. It’s two different talents.

How do you feel about DJ's that have never touched vinyl?

I can’t knock them because they are actually acquiring a new skill, a "programming on the fly skill" but still nothing beats vinyl. That’s like playing the guitar on a keyboard. It’s always going to feel and sound better if you’re playing an actual guitar.

You were nominated for best mixtape producer a few times at the Justo Awards. Was that a big honor?

Yeah it was great to get noticed. I release a lot of records every year to the mix tapes, probably more than any other producer and most of the time people don’t even realize what I've done. I lost against Green Lantern everytime (Laughs) That’s my dude but shit if I had a radio show to play all my records on…

How did Beast Music come about?

It’s been my production company for years and everyone I do music with now just reps the name. It’s become a label, a click, and now a movement and we have several producers and artists signed to the company. We also have the most popular –shirts on the Web!

Tell us about your artist Billionz.

Billionz is a beast. He’s out in N.C. killin’ it, doin’ his round and making noise. He has hit records and we are about to find him a home at the top of the year. He is the first South Beast music artist we ever had.

You were nominated for a Grammy for your work with Mariah. What was your reaction to that?

Scram Jones: I was definitely honored and it’s something I will forever be grateful for. Hardwork definitely does pay off.

Tell us about Haffa.

Haffa is my other artist and he’s also a serious problem. He is from Brooklyn but rests in The Bronx and he is the artist behind one of the most creative and controversial records in the history of hip-hop- The King Is Dead (Convo With B.I.G.). If you haven’t heard it go on Limewire or Google it. Other than that, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. He is very versatile and has some serious records in the stash. He will also release his debut album next year some time through Beast Music.

Any projects coming up?

I got a joint on the Ghostface's album that just came out called "Yapp City" and then I got 1 or 2 on Saigon’s album coming out in January and then dropping my own little album/compilation through Nature Sounds. I’m also working on Raekwon’s project, Nature’s project, and Kool G Rap’s project as well.

Anything you'd like to say to the fans?

Thank you for the support. 2008 will be a big year for Beast Music so stay tuned and make sure to check me at MySpace.com/Scramjonesmusic.
