NYOIL sent shockwaves across the nation last year when he released a Youtube clip for his song “Yall Should Be Lynched” which called for the lynching of some of the biggest names in the hip hop industry for their lack of creativity and derogatory content.

The video featured images of 50 Cent, Lil Kim and Three Six Mafia attached to scenes of slavery, lynchings and minstrel. Hip-hop had never seen such an attack on it's most popular stars. As hard as it is to believe NYOIL didn't always have such a strong hold on the more conscious side of hip-hop.
He at one time succumbed to the trends that are prevalent in todays hip-hop music: women and money. It was when he played a song, one that could be considered degrading to women for his wife and daughter and saw the shame in their eyes that he decided to flip the script and make more music more in tune with his own beliefs. Since then, OIL has made music that not only inspires thought, but action.
Not backed by any label or distribution to speak of, NYOIL continues to make music that inspires thought. Never one to bite his tongue, Sixshot.com sat down with NYOIL to get his opinion on the most current events on hip-hop. We discussed the allegations against King of the South, T.I, Nas naming his album the "N" w
ord, and the overall state of hip-hop.
What's good man, how's life?
It's difficult. Having a hard time balancing between real life and trying to make NYOIL a thing I can continue to do in real life.
So tell us about your life growing up in Staten Island.
It was wonderful. A beautiful combination of city and suburbs. NYC is easily accessible from Staten Island so the wonder and culture of being from NY was always available but at the same token we could escape to a slower pace.
"Ya'll Should All Get Lynched" brought you a lot of attention, both positive and negative. How did you feel about the response?
Initially surprised. Then I thought I understood why so many people tapped into the song. I thought they connected to the rage…. Maybe to hearing a point of view. Their point of view being represented.
What were you trying to get across with that song?
The abject frustrations that people are feeling like being bullied by someone that you don't have to take it from. Like someone is bullying you with the threat of violence but never really acting on it. And then they take it too far and you finally get fed up and react. And when you react it is a violent and sometimes over done reaction.
Like had you said something when it all first started it could have been a simple matter of correcting their behavior but now that is has gone on they feel emboldened and you feel desperate and so your reaction is over the top, now you wanna lynch someone. Kill someone for something that in truth doesn't deserve that much anger or at it didn't at first.
Are you as disgusted with rappers and their music as you indicate in that song?
I am disgusted in the quality of men and women that some of my people have become that they would do anything, Absolutely anything for money.
How do you feel about the black leaders of today?
I feel like the ones that are being called black leaders aren't black leaders. If anything they are the ones that white media will acknowledge. That doesn't make them a leader that makes them parrots. Many of them are lost and have lost what made them frontlines people in the civil rights days. I think many of them have had that spunk beaten out of them. I mean, sometimes we are harder than we should be on these brothers. These cats have seen things we talk about like they are fables and fiction. They experienced death for fighting for Civil rights. I don't know that kind of struggle. So you have to be mindful of what you say about them. You have to walk a mile in these people’s shoes
What do you think about the T.I situation?
That is another example of poor choices. Fact is, if you know you're a felon and can't have guns and damn sure can't have a silencer. You aint been snitched on. You was someone’s patsy.
Before you decided to make your content deep, your topics were a little more typical right? Why did you switch it up?
Well it was due to the production I was working with. Cats were convinced I should be rhyming the sort of shit everyone else is doing. But it wasn't me and the energy in the room wasn't me so I freed myself of that situation. Freed myself of the things that were holding me back and held on to what truly mattered to me. My life and my kids love.
How do you feel about artist with similar goals as yours, like Immortal Technique?
I feel these brothers should make more of a concerted effort to work together so we can be a viable force in this industry.
Materialism was always prevalent in hip-hop. Do you think it's a bigger problem now?
I don't think it is materialism. That is a mistake we make. We say money is the root of all evil. No, it is the Greed and blinding lust for money from which much evil is spawned. It isn't materialism that is a problem, it is the abandonment of any sort of value system for this materialism to be based on that is killing us. It ain't about having fly shit' it's about saying I don't give a fuck I'll do anything for that fly shit and hurt anyone to get it.
Being as independent as you are surely lets you have artistic integrity but is it hard to make a living?
Extremely, I am doing this off nothing and sometimes it is real cool cause I can do whatever I feel like doing. When there is something for me to do. And therein lies the problem. It is hard to get out there with no budget or no one really to back you. It is hard to make the connections you need to make to get at money and opportunity. Truthfully I don't know how I am going to do this second album because I just don't have the dough.
I had a distribution deal with Masta Mix Records but this dude did a terrible job of distributing the record. Missed a lot of the buzz and then skipped town when it was time to pay me for what I was due. And what is sad about it is that son is a black man. I passed on a few distribution situations to work with this brother not that they were all that great either but I passed so that this black man and me could make history together. Imagine the story that would have been…. And this dude didn't stay true to his word.
It will be very very difficult to put my faith in another brother in that capacity again. That was the one time too many. Mind you one shouldn't put FAITH in anyone when it comes to business and that was my big mistake. Feeling instead of knowing a thing from fact.

People have said HoodTreason is a classic. Tell us about all that went into the album and how people responded to you.
I am glad that it is being recognized as a classic. It was a beautiful album. Mainly because all the beats were donated by the producers on the album. Including the title cut Hood Treason R, which was produced by my dude Victor Strange out of NJ.
I had to single him out because his name didn't go on the actual album. That was my bad, I did the graphics and screwed up. So I hope the brother charge that to the head and not to the heart real talk.
Why isn't music selling, in your opinion?
Cause it isn't good. Music isn't a product you can keep bullshitting people to buy. Music is about an artistic connection and if there is none after a while it become like any other product has a limited shelf life and dies
You're music is controversial, do you still get approached by a lot of record labels?
Nah not really. You gotta realize that I am the worst thing for many cats in this industry. If what I am doing becomes popular then it cuts off a product that people have made a great deal of money off of. Disposable music.
How do you feel about Nas calling his album the "N" word?
I don't feel anything about Nas.
Tell us your feelings on the Jena 6.
I regret doing the song
Do you think Bill O'Reilly is a flat out racist?
I think he is a racist and a victim of white supremacy. One of these white people who really think they are right about shit based off of pure ignorance of a different paradigm. The sad part is they are unwilling to even consider or hear someone else’s viewpoint or try to understand what someone else is thinking. And if you continue to see things from one angle and deal with them from that angle. Well, hey, I bet a lot of dudes like that ended up sleeping with pre op trannys (laughs) cause they only saw them from one angle and didn't change view points to see that Adams apple. (Laughs)
Do you consider building wealth, and having a nice car and a nice house wrong? Do you feel people should put these goals on the back burner?
Are you crazy? (Laughs) Get that dough!!! Get all the dough!! Fuck That! I am a capitalist. I am an American. I don't have issue with these things. I have an issue with people who misuse the rights and sometime privileges they are blessed with to do wrong to the people. But get that money. How will we ever get a foothold in this country or make some sort of changes if we are not able to significantly lobby from a political and economic platform. These things have to be recognized and embraced. Black men and women need to focus on becoming strong in new frontiers so we can compete. Not just rappers and athletes.
What projects do you have coming up in the near future?
The DVD called Hood Treason making of a movement. An Internet comic book. My own website. BET is producing an animated version of Yall Should All Get Lynched, which should be out sometime next year. A few other things but I gotta get my money right. (laughs)
