Fans, magazines, websites and critics alike have praised this young man for being one of the most talented unsigned artists in the game. S-K-Y-Z-O-O is his name so remember it. For those who don’t know, Skyzoo hails from Brooklyn has released a classic EP titled Cloud 9: The 3 Day High, a 12 track disc that was created in 3 days strictly using all 9th Wonder beats and not to forget his street banger, "Corner Store Classic" that still has the streets talking.

With tons of freestyles up his sleeve, Skyzoo is a successor of the game despite having no deal. He knows the in’s and out’s of the industry and is waiting for the right deal to come across his path.
Skyzoo is a dude who practically lives in the studio, but luckily I caught up with him and we spoke about his future projects and his legendary headlining show with Slick Rick tomorrow ( November 24) at BBKings in New York ($20 at the door, $18 in advance, BBKings.com).
What’s good Sky!! Since our last interview you’ve released "Corner Store Classic" and you were getting great feedback from the media, the streets and your fans for Cloud 9. Did you ever think that Cloud 9 would gain so much attention?
Honestly no, I didn't know it was gonna be as big as it became. I knew
having 9th wonder behind it would get it noticed and recognized but I didn't know it would be this big.
Since the release of Cloud 9 and "Corner Store Classic", do you think you’ve solidified a spot in the game that mainstream emcees should watch out for?
Definitely. There's no one unsigned with a bigger buzz than mine right now. That's not being cocky or nasty or anything, its just facts. I'm incredibly thankful, honored, and humbled by it all, but it's all facts. Whenever I put a record up on the net or release a record to college radio or do an interview in a magazine or a site, it gets the most number of plays and views. It's an incredible feeling, knowing that the fans love and support what I'm doing. It keeps me on the right track.
The last time we spoke, you said the game is a competitive sport. What artists (unsigned or signed) are on the same level as Skyzoo?
As an emcee and a competitor I'm gonna obviously say no one is better, as the next man should say and feel the same way about himself, but there are definitly people that I'm a fan of and that I respect. Lupe, The Clipse/Re-Up Gang, Kanye, Jeezy, Guilty Simpson, LB, Joell Ortiz, Stimuli, and of course the legends like Jay, Nas, Em, etc. I'm a fan of the music as well as an artist, and that makes me hear things in a different light.
Since you’ve received praise for being one of the dopest rappers in the game via Hot 97s Peter Rosenberg and the only unsigned artist among that list. Do you get an outpouring of deals to get signed? What’s the status on getting a deal?
I get more attention every time another accolade is achieved. The Hot 97 list was a phenomenal feat. Being credited as one of the top 10 rappers alive by Hot 97, and then being the only one on the list, I can't describe the feeling. Labels are hollering and my management and I are looking at what's the best road to take. It's all happening real soon.
What are you looking for in a label?
Belief, support, trust, and dedication. I want a label to give me creative control and trust that I'm gonna make the best album possible. I'm promising that my album will be one of the most wonderful albums in years. I'm putting my all into the project, so I want a label to do the same. If we both work hard we can't lose. It will all be worth it.
Last Saturday you put together a Success Party to celebrate your accomplishments. How was it?
It was real dope. We had a good turn out, and I just wanted to thank the people for all the support they've given me throughout 2007. It's been a huge year, and I appreciate everyone who was apart of it; from my team who's with me everyday to the fans who copped the music and learned the words, everyone matters.
What was your reaction when you heard Talib Kweli use your name with a couple of BK greats on “Lightworking” from the 2K8: B-Ball Zombie War LP (Stones Throw Records) “Rhyme for survival/I rep BK like Big, Jay and Skyzoo". Describe your reaction to that.
I went nuts. I came up on Talib and Mos the same way I came up on Jay and B.I.G. and Nas and Wu Tang, the same way I came up on Mase and Puff. So it was a big deal for me. I hung with Talib at Baseline a few times and he told me he was into my work heavy and I was blown away. When I heard the rhyme though, that took me to another level. I owe Talib one for that. Haha.
What can you contribute to the game that will change the current state of monotonous rappers?
Great music. That's all it really takes. People think they have to come up with some mind-blowing scheme to sell records again, just make mind blowing music, same as that. Look at Alicia Keys, she dropped a dope song with ringtone capabilities in it, along with a beautiful album. The result? 742,000 copies in 7 days. No scheme, no gimmick, just great music and promo. So my goal is that. Bottom line.
You’re one of the most ambitious unsigned rappers that I know. When an opportunity comes your way, you take it. What drives you?
Knowing that there's someone out there that wants what I want, so I gotta get it first. I was put on this earth to make music that lasts. If I don't do all that it takes to do so, I'm disappointing God. Plus I gotta feed my family. I don't want my future kids to ever know what the hood feels like.
What don’t you like about the game?
The politics, bullshit, lies, deceit, the list goes on and on. Everything besides the actual making of the music is wack. But with the good comes the bad, so you gotta deal with it.
Several Hip-Hop sites are always after the next “Exclusive” on mainstream artists. Do you think it’s important to have forums for unsigned artists like yourself to be heard?
Absolutely. Without these sites a lot of artists wouldn't exist. This is how we live and connect to fans worldwide.
As an artist, you have no problem with collabing with unsigned producers and rappers. How can aspiring rappers and producers reach you?
The best way to reach me is on my webpage which is www.myspace.com/skyzoo. I personally run that so if you holla I'll get it.
You told me that you’re in the studio like crazy. What projects do you have coming up? And what collabos should we look out for?
I'm working a "Corner Store Classic" remix project for iTunes. That's dropping in January '08. Then a few more things are lined up so stay tuned.
Last time, I saw you at Chaundon’s Mixtape Release party back in September. Do you think it’s very important to support artists like Chaundon, Torae, Little Brother or any artist that’s really trying to break into the game?
Yeah because we have to be each other's support. We have to keep a connection and have that unity. That's the only way we'll survive.
When can we expect the official Skyzoo album?
As soon as I lock in the major deal, it'll be my main focus. I can't wait to start it.
How did you get the opportunity to headline a show alongside Hip-Hop legend Slick Rick?
My man Matt Santo hooked that up. He's a dope show promoter. Being able to say I'm rocking with Slick Rick is a huge honor. I can't wait.
You were telling me about having a new business venture with iTunes. What are the details on that?
They saw the movement moving and wanted to be apart of it. The digital age is in full force, so I have to be able to tag that up too.
Off topic, but I ask everyone this. Beside yourself, if you had to listen to only one album for the REST of your life, what would it be?
John Coltrane A Love Supreme. Hands down, the greatest piece of music ever.
Lastly, What’s next for Skyzoo?
World domination. Haha. Nah, just more great music. The world part will come later.
Sky it’s always a pleasure talking to you. Thanks again for the interview and I’ll see you on the 24th at the BBKings show. Any last comments.
Thanx for the support and thanks to all the fans who hold me down. I love all yall for that. I will always have music for yall to be proud of. And holla at me anytime on the net at www.myspace.com/skyzoo.
