The story of New Jersey bred rapper Sam Scarfo is an unlikely one. While trying to get his Guerilla Pimp Records off the ground via hustling on the streets of Jersey, Scarfo made a saavy business move and purchased his own studio. Unfortunately, his hustling  also got him caught up and he was incarcerated.

Luckily for Sam, he had loyal friends who kept his dream alive by keeping the studio maintained and making music while he was away. When he arrived home he immediately began recording music. Five songs into his comeback, he was granted a meeting with Jay-Z.

The day of the meeting, Jay-Z’s first on the job, Sam was signed to the hip-hop's biggest label, Def Jam.

Sixshot.Com sat down with Sam Scarfo to discuss his past, how he wants to make Jersey a powerhouse, and his influences.

How come Jersey doesn't have a lot of MC's right now? It seems like it's you, Budden, and Serius Jones.

And we all signed to the same label (laughs). A lot of times Jersey is viewed as a part of New York. In Philly they got the big beards and they have their own slang. There are also a lot of transplants in Jersey, from New York and Philly. But we do have a voice though and we want to be heard.

Where do you feel you fit in today’s hip-hop game?

I'm a breath of fresh air. I'm a throwback to a hot east coast artist, not just an east coast artist, but a hot east coast artist. I mean I feel like I don't even need a co-sign. I have my own movement.

What makes you stand out from other rappers?

A lot of guys are selling tough guy images, or how many years they did in jail. It seems like nobody is selling music. I can rap about my jail time and what I did on the corner but I don’t, I would rather sell music.

Are there any artists you’re looking forward to working with?

All the greats, Jay-Z, Kanye, he's a real musical dude. T.I, Jeezy anybody that can make you feel what they're saying. Snoop also, he's another one.

Do you feel like people are slacking on their lyrics?

Yeah, it’s definitely a problem. The game is supposed to change. Where's the new Jay-Z? Where's the new Tupac, Biggie, Nas? Where are they? The game is supposed to change because we're still holding on to the artists themselves. Not to say they shouldn’t do it, they're the greatest. But if there are no new artists when theses guys decide to stop rapping, hip-hop will die. The problem is cats want to be ushered in, we have to usher ourselves in.

You’re signed to the biggest hip-hop label ever. How did that come about?

Oh man, it was a chance meeting. I'm the last dude that ever got signed like this. The last of the Mohicans (laughs). It was Jay-Z's first day on the job and one of the A&R's had my records and he really believed in them.

I was doing 'Fight Club' but they didn't know anything about it. They liked the records and they wanted to meet me. So I went in there and performed the records and they signed me.

I was up there in front of L.A. Reid and Jay-Z performing my records. That's crazy. I was only home from jail for 4 months. I was up in the office with a pack in my pocket. I was straight off the corner (Laughs). But if I never put out a single, I never put out an album it doesn't matter to me, performing for those guys was worth the price of admission.

When can we expect your debut album?

Hopefully soon. I mean I have had a few things that hindered me from being in the studio. I was on tour or I was on the road. I had a serious altercation with the police.

Right now, I really want to make myself hot. Jay-Z said I'm the next big thing, so I gotta do it. I mean when I went up there to sign I had 5 songs. It was like boom, I’m there. Jersey is slept on so right now I’m gonna bring that exposure.

Guerilla Pimp Records is your label tell us about that?

Well it started in 2002. It's like any hood label. Rappers now have their own labels. Cats think it's easy so they just start up a label. What I did d was, I bought a studio. Shortly after I went to jail but when I got home luckily my teams kept the studio running and the music was cooked up just right.

You put out The Corner with Whoo Kid. Why’d u pick Whoo Kid to host it?

At the time I was rolling with Mobb Deep real hard and they had just signed to G-Unit, so I was around Whoo Kid a lot. He was one of the people that was spinning my records. It wasn’t even like I have to get somebody to host this. It was natural, like I’m around him so hell be the one to do it.

Where do you see yourself in the future?

Behind the scenes. I don’t wanna be on the stage for too much longer (Laughs). I want to be one of the spearheads of the Jersey movement. I don’t have beef with anybody in Jersey so I could link people up.

Anything u want to say to the fans?

Free Lunch mixtape is out now. Google it, however you gotta get it. I also have a DVD called Scarlito's Way coming out around Christmas. Hit me up at http://www.myspace.com/samscarfo.
