No Limit Records was once the most popular label in hip-hop. Everybody from Master P to Silkk, to Corey 'C-Murder' Miller were riding high.
In 2002, things would take an ugly turn when C-Murder was accused of shooting and killing a sixteen year old at Louisiana nightclub. The rapper, who vehemently denied the charge, was sentenced to life in prison.
His verdict would be ov
erturned by the Louisiana Supreme Court in early 2006 and he was released and put under house arrest to await a new trial for the case.
The New Orleans bred rapper, who now has a new lease on life , recently sat down with Sixshot.com to discuss his charities and how being sentenced to life in prison can change one’s mentality.
You’ve been through a lot man, how you feeling’?
Feelin’ good man, movin’ forward, you know, just generating movement.
How did you get through these times? A lot of people would have cracked.
It’ about survival, ya heard me? It’s all in my music man. I been there before without no food and I had to do it again, ya heard me?
No Limit was huge. Why did it lose popularity?
It was a time when we were reachin’ out but a lot of doors were closed. Basically, I feel like we ain’t keep up. Things were movin’ and we w
asn’t keepin’ up.
Did you do a lot of writing while you were away?
Not a lot but at times it would come to me. I would be asleep and I would wake up and write a song. It might go on like that for two months.
So Tru Records is still up and running right?
I’m a CEO man; I’m supposed to feel good. The big dog back man. I got the Cutt Boyz comin’ out. They crucial man. I’mma be promoting them hard. This is my real homies on this label. Plus we got Deadly Soundz, which is the production team that consists of 2 Saint and Yella.
We got G-Dinero and Versatile. We even got Tru Publishing coming. I’m releasing a novel by Jackie O. I got a single with me and Jacki O too, “Grown and Gangsta”.
The Movement DVD is coming out on December 11 through Asylum, tell us about that.
That’s gonna be in stores everywhere man. You gonna see me in the studio; see how I write, how fast I write some songs. You gonna get some of the music, not too much, but you gonna get some of it. It shows me goin’ through the hood man. This is raw footage. It shows how Katrina has affected my city and everything.
What about the next CD? When’s that coming?
It’s crucial. I stepped my game up 100%. I’m tellin’ stories. I’m letting ‘em know my personal side. We got the club bangers; you know songs I felt I could perform on a stage. It’s something to ride to, where you can listen to the whole album and you don’t gotta skip no tracks, but I’ll let people make up their own minds. I got Pimp C on there; I got Chamillionaire, Letoya, and Akon.
Do you feel like you can recreate the success you had with No Limit?
Lemme tell ya’ll something. I know from my heart that I’ma surpass it. The sky is the limit. If I didn’t think I was gonna surpass it I woulda done something else. No Limit laid the groundwork and now I’ma continue it. I’ma do it like G-Unit and Rocafella, you know, the big dogs in
the game.
Will you be working with Silkk the Shocker at all?
Silk and me gonna be doin’ movies. We were supposed to have songs on this album but I don’t know what happened. They got mixed up or something and they ain’t made it for mixing and mastering. I was mad about that.
After all you’ve been through, has your mentality changed?
Man, after all I’ve been through you’d be a fool to have the same mentality. I mean my patience is a lot better. I care about the little things now.
I got my non-profit, which is 'Help Me Help You'. We help the kids; show ‘em love on Christmas and back to school. I like goin’ to the schools and talking to the kids. I might go to four elementary schools and four high schools, like with my book we did that. I just wanna let 'em know that somebody cares about ‘em even if they don’t have no parents.
How are you feeling about the future overall?
I’m just takin' everything step by step but I got major plans, You know I wanna teach the artist I got under me, teach them how to deal with this money they gonna make off sellin records. I wanna put ‘em in the right direction and let ‘em know it’s about loyalty and putting fam first. Like I gotta chill with a dude for a while before I sign him to make sure his mind is right.
Do you feel like a lot of people turned their back on you?
Yeah, but I like people to expose themselves so I don’t gotta waste my time and energy on’em. I’ll call’em up and thank ‘em. (Laughs) I might speak to you if I see you homey but I aint gonna chill with ya. Don’t call me no more, don’t text me no more. (Laughs)
What else is in the works for you?
My book Death Around The Corner is doin’ real well. We’re looking to turn it into a movie right now. We got some deals on the table. I mean it even got 5 stars on Amazon.com, which is excellent, especially for a first time author.
Anything you wanna tell the fans and people who supported you?
Ya boy is back, he on the grind. I’ma give you that music you could ride to, without flippin’ through it. Look out for TRU.
