Alright Big Moe, you were born and raised in the the 3rd Ward in South Houston. What was life like growing up?
Life was hard. Real hard. We didn't have much money and had to heat our house with the stove. It was tough, but I grew up in the church so we made it through.
When did you start rapping
Actually, I started out as a singer, which camefrom my church upbringing and involvement. I was in a R&B group and all that. That R&B thing didn't work out and I ended up doing some music with DJ Screw singing first then rapping. I just stuck with it.
How would you describe your style?
I'm a Rap-Singa'. I can do and excel at both. I rap more than anything else, but I just put them together.
In 1999 you dropped that hot independent solo debut “City of Syrup”, it blew up to sell over 200,000 copies. Those are good numbers for any artist, and tremendous numbers for an independent solo debut that was distributed pretty much only in Texas. What is “City of Syrup” all about and how do you and your team, Wreckshop/Platinum Soul put together hits? Did y’all expect it to blow up to that extent?
First, all due respect to 3-6 Mafia…Love that. Got much love for them. But [Houston] been about syrup. We been on that syrup thing for the longest. We been on it and everybody down here been on it, just didn’t have the money to get that out there, and [3-6] did. As far as the hit thing goes, Nah, we didn’t expect that at all. Nobody knows if
it’s a hit or not until the radio gets a hold to it. Then that’s when its gonna be revealed as to whether its going to be a hit or not. A hit is a prize from the Lord.
The national debut is “Purple World”, the lead single “Purple Stuff” where did the Purple concept come from and what’s it all about?
It’s just something I thought was catchy. Purple is my favorite color. Basically its about the Texas lifestyle. It was an idea that I just came with. You gotta be smart about it as far as making a hit.
You hook up with UGK’s Pimp C on a real hot track called “Cash”. Tell me how that happened
We hooked up and got in the studio and just freestyled that. I had just lost one of my boys right before me and Pimp C did this song so I was feelin it when I hit the studio. We just heard the beat and attacked it. We freestyled that and then put a hook to it. No writing.
Are you touring? If so, where are you going and who’s touring with you?
No, not really touring right now. Right now, I’m promoting this record. Meeting DJ’s, going to clubs…like that. The touring thing is coming up, but not right now.
And when is that album dropping?
