Trick Trick has a new single out with Eminem "Welcome 2 Detroit." His new album, The People Vs. will be in stores in December.
SixShot.com: When did you start rapping?
Trick Trick: I started in 91. I didn’t get serious about it until 95.
SixShot.com: You had your own independent label “Wonderboy Entertainment” correct?
Trick Trick: I had a hit record before. Had a single that went gold back in 95/96. The money steadily rolled in and was enough to carry the label.
SixShot.com: How did you hook up with Eminem?
Trick Trick: We came up in the same game in the same city. It was inevitable that he succeeded. He reached back and grabbed a winner. I’ve always held respect for what he was doing.
SixShot.com: Who are some of the people you worked with on THE PEOPLE Vs.?
Trick Trick: Jazze Phae, Eminem, Mister Porter, Big Proof, Diesel “The Hitman.”.
SixShot.com: How long did it take to record the album?
Trick Trick: I own my own studio so it was just picking which songs to use for this particular project. M sat down with me and said you have to use the hard stuff and make the album as tough as possible.
SixShot.com: How did you come up with the title for this album?
Trick Trick: The title comes from a court document…being charged with a felony…People of the state Versus (fill in the blank).
SixShot.com: What makes The People Vs different than some of the ot
her rap albums already out there?
Trick Trick: It brings music back to the game. The melody of the music itself as well as it’s real. It’s not fictitious. I talk about what Trick Trick knows and what Trick Trick does.
SixShot.com: You’ve already been on tour with some of the hottest hip-hop artists out. Do you feel any pressure on your debut album release?
Trick Trick: I feel no pressure what so ever. I believe in God and it all happens according to God’s plan.
SixShot.com: Do you think growing up in the inner city of Detroit was instrumental in your rap lyrics?
Trick Trick: My lyrics comes from everything going on; some from actual events in the past few years.
SixShot.com: Has Detroit radio been supportive of you?
Trick Trick: Yes, extremely supportive of me.
SixShot.com: Do you feel the rap game has gone pop?
Trick Trick: In some instances yes. If you don’t expand into new horizons or expand what you’re doing then what are you in business for. Hip-hop or Hip-pop music is universal--supposed to touch and reach everybody.
SixShot.com: Which pioneers of rap do you most admire?
Trick Trick: RUN DMC, Public Enemy, NWA, etc.
SixShot.com: How has your life changed since your success?
Trick Trick: I’m cautious of my surrounding…watching out for those that don’t support or agree with the position I’m in—the haters. I can’t go to the mall by myself. Sometimes fans can get a little aggressive, but it’s all good. I just go with the flow.
SixShot.com: Is there anything else you would like to share with the readers?
Trick Trick: Yes. My website is www.trick-trick.com. The People Vs comes out on December 13th . Everybody will enjoy it. People who’ve heard the album like at least six songs on it.
