Sixshot.com: How did the DPG album come together?
Daz Dillinger: The album came together by me just sitting in a room thinking of putting something together while Jermaine Dupri handled some big business with his album “Queen Side”, so I came in and filled the gap.
Sixshot.com: Jermaine approached you?
Daz Dillinger: No, we already had a deal on the table. This was just in the mean time. I put an album out because I have my own distribution.
Sixshot.com: There is some soft r’n’b tracks on the album, how did you get from gangsta’ to smooth?
Daz Dillinger: there ain’t any soft tracks; it’s more P-funk tracks you know what I mean? Some tracks on the album are hard and some are smooth, I was trying to come up with a variety of tracks. Because all my hard tracks don’t get played on the radio, that’s why I had to do some smooth ones too.
Sixshot.com: Who produced your album?
Daz Dillinger: I basically produced it myself with my co-producer.
Sixshot.com: How is featured on the DPG album?
Daz Dillinger: There are many features like George Clinton and Nate Dogg.
Sixshot.com: How was your experience working with a living legend like George Clinton?
Daz Dillinger: We had a good time, you know, I worked with George many times before. He’s cool…
Sixshot.com: If you could cho
ose anybody right now to work with, who would you choose? And why?
Daz Dillinger: Alicia Keys so that I can just drool and look at her.
Sixshot.com: How if your tour going? You are in Atlanta right now?
Daz Dillinger: The tour is going real smooth, I enjoy it. I will be part of the tour from the 31st to the 5th in Florida, they hit like Utah, but there are some free shows…
Sixshot.com: Do you prefer being out there on tour or do you like better working in a studio?
Daz Dillinger: I like all the above…
Sixshot.com: How did you deal with Virgin come together?
Daz Dillinger: Jermaine Dupri, I just happen to be hooked up with J.D. because there is nobody in the West trying to help somebody. “I went to Dr. Dre, Ice Cube them motha’ fuckers is taking all day to help a mutha fucka”.
Sixshot.com: How did you come together with J.D.?
Daz Dillinger: Me and J.D. have been friends for years, since Kris Cross. I did a mix tape with him and from then on it has been history. Now I get to work with Janet Jackson, Bow Wow and everybody J.D. gets in contact with….
Sixshot.com: So there was no love for you from the West Coast Producers?
Daz Dillinger: Something like that, they really didn’t believe in me. But you know I am putting my own records out for like 10 years now, I am putting my own work out ever since 1998.
Sixshot.com: Do you think what happened to you is similar to what happened to Kurrupt?
Daz Dillinger: See, Kurrupt fucked his own legacy up…going back to Def Row…he had no money then and he has non now. And now he is going to Jail because the dude that beat up on Dr. Dre was snitching on him is saying that Suge was paying $5,000 to put a hit out on Dre. Now the police is looking for Suge Knight. Ain’t it stupid? “Stupidest Gansta in the World”. Straight out of the comic books.
Daz Dillinger: Now, I am out here with Janet Jackson, Jermaine Dupri, Bow Wow and all the people that are connected to Jermaine.
Sixshot.com: How about Touring overseas? Did you go to Europe or Asia to tour before? Are they feeling you?
Daz Dillinger: The are feeling me, if they invite Snoop over there then they must like to invite me. I have been over there before, I get a good vibe, I just haven’t been able to get my sales going over there. We will see once my album with J.D. comes out…
Sixshot.com: There are rumors that you will do a song with Ashanti for Germany?
Daz Dillinger: OK. Out distribution company in Germany called XYZ wants me to do a remix on an Ashanti track for Germany…that’s what it is. But we are still discussing it and nothing had been worked out so far.
Sixshot.com: Let me know more about your label Gansta Advisory Recording? Isn’t this a bit much after your deals with J.D.?
Daz Dillinger: No, that way I get to own everything I do and we are distributing our stuff everywhere trough my label, we have distribution deals in Germany, Australia and Japan. That’s what’s good in having an independent label; you can do any deals you want all over the world.
Sixshot.com: What is your next project?
Daz Dillinger: I am working on So, So Gangsta album with J.D., it will probably come out late this year. Also I have an other album coming out called the Dog Pound Gangsta presents Gansta Krunk, my favorite track on there is ”Badass Gangstas”, “I am lookin for a Gansta Bitch” there’s a song with me Young Gotti and another with my home girl Maya “spelled Maya”. Big Baby, he’s in from Mississippi. You know, just keeping it cracken. This is a ten song album. My cousin Joe Cool is drawing the cover.
Sixshot.com: What do you think are the biggest changes in the Game since you came in about 10 years ago?
Daz Dillinger: I think the bad thing is that all the companies merge and all the money is in one popped up in one big company now, and it’s hard to get a distribution deal when your not having any distribution, and the good changes are that the whole world opened up to hip-hop. Hip-Hop is the no. 1 music in the world right now.
Sixshot.com: Do you think it’s more dangerous 10 years ago in hip hop then it is now?
Daz Dillinger: There’s more controversy then there was a long time ago but now things are just upstream and main every thing is out, ain’t no home boys it’s just out everybody fuckin and everything, you know what I mean?
Sixshot.com: How do you feel about the current state of hip hop? What are you trying to do for yourself and your music? Why do you do this?
Daz Dillinger: Create Jobs for me and my people. The records that we own we are going to be living for the rest of our lives. And plus, I am the Prince of the West coast. That’s my crown, “I am the Prince”.
Sixshot.com: It feels to me that you have been gone for a few years? Where did you go, what happened?
Daz Dillinger: I ain’t really gone know where. I have been putting my records out every year. Last year I ripped on four records. My own catalogue, it’s just you gots to get out there and find em’. He’s in the cockpit and we are back in the planet smoking.
It’s like going from Indy to Major. {For the last four years He has been the top independent underground artist out there, there is nobody that compares, he has a following in underground we release these albums independently, we sell 50,000 to One hundred thousand that’s going Ghetto Platinum.}
Sixshot.com: I didn’t really realize that he went underground? I just thought that he just isn’t releasing anything right now.
Daz Dillinger: {He did bring out a ton of music, its just getting to the poor fans, part of what fans don’t like about the rap game today is that a lot of artist are just over exposing themselves. They are not real artist anymore, He’s keeping it underground keeping it real and then we’ll take the next stride and make something commercial.}Working everyday all day. And when you listen to this “Dogg Pound Gangsta Album” it’s like a lot of the fans reactions makes me think of the “Dogg Food” my first Album you know.
