The Game is definitely over. Click the charts, Lil’ Flip’s solo suit slid slots to numero uno. Was it predictable? Yizzurp! How? From the echoes that whispered Flip, Flip, Flip, in the Game Over video. Will he continue to proceed…let’s flip, flip, flip topics.
The Stats
Lil’ Flip has been aligned with the dirty south and its culture for a long grind coming. His knack for independent marketing has clearly netted him to the top of the Hip-Hop charts. From the sizzurps to spinners to platinum grills, Flips’ aura dealt a magnificent blow to the east, mid, and west coasts. His stats include indie sales of over 100,000 units from his previous debut The Leprechaun. Next to Scarface, Lil’ Flip is one of the largest acts to break out of Texas.
Sixshot.com: What's good Flip? Tell me about your move from being an independent south star to becoming one of the biggest mainstream artists right now?
Lil’ Flip: Well basically it was all about my work habits even before I got a deal. It’s just more money and more exposure now. I’ve been on the road since 1999 when I graduated.
; So again, the big difference is more exposure and more money. You just can't sit back and wait on the label to do things for you. It's like ya’ll are walking step-by-step. It's a cool thing.
Sixshot.com: How are you dealing with the fame that accompanies the mainstream? Do you have the same edge that fans know you by?
Lil’ Flip: Well I mean I just feel that you gotta be more creative with what you do. You never want to drop the same kind of music. I just feel that as long as you grow with your music you should be alright. As long as it's original you should be alright.
Sixshot.com: How did you penetrate the east coast market? That's a difficult market to break into, much less the west coast.
Lil’ Flip: Well by doing the mix-tapes. Like every Whoo Kid CD that comes out I'm on it. Every Kay Slay disc that comes out I'm on it. I did a lot of freestyles with Cam’ron.
Sixshot.com: What strengths do you find in this album? How do you feel about it?
Lil Flip: This one I will say…its more energy in it. I got Cam’ron on the album and I got Ludacris on the album. I got Pastor Troy on the album, David Banner and 3-6 Mafia are on the album. I had more fun with this album and it’s more energy in the music. I had fun though, I had fun...
Sixshot.com: What are your plans for Clover G Records?
Lil’ Flip: Oh! My label is Clover G Records. Will-Lean he's coming out from Houston. Kemis,
He is dropping. I'm going to do a movie. And I'm going to drop a DVD, a month after the album comes out.
Sixshot.com: Ok so you’re going to do that next. Now tell us about the single Game Over and the energy that breeds from it?
Lil’ Flip: Game Over, actually that track was kind of like an accident. The beat got passed on to me by an A&R dude and I put it in. I kinda just went in there and did it. I really didn't want to do it because there was a track like that already out with a Pac-Man sample.
Sixshot.com: Yeah!
Lil’ Flip: I don't like to do what other people do but it was totally different. It wasn't like the one that was already out. A lot of times people get their ego in the way of what's gonna make them move units. Everybody likes Game Over so I would have been dumb not to put out what people want to hear.
Sixshot.com: You're right.
Lil’ Flip: So that's how that happened.
Sixshot.com: What other empires do you have planned?
Lil’ Flip: Well I got my own liquor coming out. It's called Lucky Nights.
Sixshot.com: So what does it taste like pineapple?
Lil’ Flip: Yeah it tastes like pineapple!!! Also I'm gonna get into the directing. Actually I co-directed the video Game Over with Benny Boom. I like being creative. I liked planning the video out. Whether it's t-shirts, I draw it out or album covers. I plan everything out before I do it because you only have one chance to mess up. You know if you mess up you might not get a second chance, so everything I do has got to be planned out.
