Posted: 1/13/2009 7:04:09 AM by Jon Michael

It’s extremely sad to say this in the year 2009 but let’s be honest here, the female MC is still somewhat of a novelty in the hip-hop world. Sure ladies like Lil Kim and Foxy Brown have become household names and proved their skills behind the mic but the bottom line is you’ll never hear their names come up in a “greatest rappers of all time” conversation. MC’s like MC Lyte, Missy Elliot, and Queen Latifah have reached legendary status but will probably never receive their just due for what they’ve contributed to the culture. Then of course there’s the main question, “does a female MC have to exude sex appeal in order to be successful”? The ones that have most successfully crossed over into the mainstream through their music have sold sex in their image. Hell, you know what they say, sex sells.

More than 30 years after the birth of hip-hop however we are still searching for a female MC who is all spit and gets through to people with her lyrics alone as opposed to showing some skin. One female hoping to make that breakthrough is Philly’s own Hedonis Da Amazon. Yes, she is a tall girl and can be quite imposing and that demeanor spills out in her music and she spits ferociously and rips through beats like a trained veteran.

After winning numerous showcases throughout the New York City area Hedonis was noticed by DJ Kay Slay Your browser does not support inline frames or is currently configured not to display inline frames. TRONG> and it’s been on and poppin’ since. She has mixtapes out and her buzz continues to grow on a daily basis. It looks like Hedonis is poised to make some serious noise in this game. Sixshot.Com caught up with Hedonis to discuss growing up in Philly, how she got into hip-hop, and how she views other female MC’s.

Sixshot.Com: What's good girl, how you doin'?

Hedonis Da Amazon: Yo what’s up? I’m really doing great right now. Everything straight like 180, you know?

Sixshot.Com: So tell us, what was life like growing up for you?

Hedonis Da Amazon: My life growing up was just the typical ghetto story. My daddy left us. My momma was constantly struggling just to keep our stomachs full. I seen a lot of dudes and chicks get merked in these streets and I seen a lot of loved ones go to jail. I got into a lot of trouble back in the day that I’m sure will come to the surface when I start to bubble crazy in the game.

Sixshot.Com: How did you get into rap music?

Hedonis Da Amazon: Rap got into me man. It’s in my blood stream. It’s something that I’ve always felt an attraction to. It was like it was always calling me. When I was young I used to write raps right after my mom would beat my ass for being bad. Writing relieved a lot of pain for me and it still does so to this day it’s similar feelings, you know what I mean?

Sixshot.Com: Who would you say are some of your musical influences?

Hedonis Da Amazon: NWA influenced me. They were real ignorant and that was funny to me. As far as woman rappers and singers I respected those who spoke what I was feeling during a certain times in my life. I really try to capture moments with my songs and even my mix-tapes. I try not to just spit whatever on a track. I try to make a song depending on what I’m feeling at that moment. To me that makes every joint I make sound more authentic.

Sixshot.Com: How did you get up with Kay Slay?

Hedonis Da Amazon: Kay Slay’s homie Dee Vasquez brought me up to Hot 97 after winning so many show cases in New York. Kay wanted to know what chick from Philly was causing all this commotion. They brought me to see him and it was really all love from that point on.

Sixshot.Com: What is your relationship like with him?

Hedonis Da Amazon: Our relationship is not phony at all. It’s not one of those fake industry type relationships. Real recognize real and Kay Slay and Dee recognized me. They’re some real dudes.

Sixshot.Com: Intimidation is crazy, how has the response been?

Hedonis Da Amazon: So far it’s been what I expected it to be which is great. The fans out there are really responding to it and I feel that the right people are giving me the attention that I deserve so it’s all going as planned.

Sixshot.Com: You, unlike some other female MC's, seem to really embrace other female rappers, why is that?

Hedonis Da Amazon: Why not? I mean, I know the difference between our styles. I don’t want these chicks to stop. I tell all of them to reach for the stars. Just don’t reach for my money and we cool. I want to see every female out there have a successful career and make their impact on the game and get that money they got to get.

Sixshot.Com: Hood Pledge was hot, what was the creative process like for that?

Hedonis Da Amazon: At that time one of the top radio stations in Philly just hired the youngest female DJ named Diamond Kuts and she was a grinder like me so we pledged to each other that we will go hard and never stop and we dropped a fire bomb. It was a great process and us both being such hard grinders and putting in so much work made it real rewarding for the both of us. I’m so happy with the way that turned out. It’s a blessing for real.

Sixshot.Com: You got the heavy co-signs in Philly from Mike Knox to Freeway. How does it feel to be so well received in your hometown?

Hedonis Da Amazon: Philly niggas respect women who respect themselves and for those who don’t they know how to treat them too. (Laughs) Those are good dudes and they know I’m a good woman so we all got respect for each other across the board, you know what I mean? We all got good relationships and those are real talented artists.

Sixshot.Com: How is the industry responding to you?

Hedonis Da Amazon: They’re responding like they should be. They know I’m the next chick up in the game so crack the malt liquor. (Laughs) I feel I’m getting the right attention from the right people and they know that I’m next up to bat. They know that I’m the next talented female artist and I’m about to do my thing. It’s exciting and I can’t wait for everything to come full circle.

Sixshot.Com: Now I gotta ask, the body is insane, do you feel that gives you a leg up over some other females trying to break into the game?

Hedonis Da Amazon: No! It don’t matter how good you look. There is nothing better than new coochie. (Laughs) I say that but it’s really true. The industry is always looking for that next hot artist whether it’s a man or a woman. New is hot in this game and if you have the right talent they’ll still love you when you’ve been around for a minute.

Sixshot.Com: What do you want to accomplish in hip-hop?

Hedonis Da Amazon: I want to accomplish everything there is to accomplish, absolutely everything. I want to do it all and I’m willing to put in that work. This is only the beginning and I could see big things happening.

Sixshot.Com: You're respected as a lyricist, is it important to you that people recognize the skills?

Hedonis Da Amazon: Tupac said it “yall got yall game from a woman”. That means that people should respect woman as MC’s if they got the skills. People know that I’m hot and that I know what I’m doing in that booth.

Sixshot.Com: What projects can we expect to see from you in the future?

Hedonis Da Amazon: Ladyland is the Album coming soon and I ain’t playing. This album is going to be something else. I’m breaking down walls with this album and this is going to put my name up there in lights so everybody should get ready for that.

Sixshot.Com: Anything you'd like to say to the fans at Sixshot.Com?

Hedonis Da Amazon: Hit me on myspace.com. My e-mail is hdaamazon@yahoo.com so ya’ll can stay in touch wit me. I love ya’ll and I thank ya’ll for showing me all this love and support. I couldn’t so it without you so stand up. I’d like to thank Sixshot.Com for taking the time out to interview me.
