There’s a saying that warriors walk alone. The burden of responsibility they carry is perhaps too great for the average man or woman to comprehend and so, they remain alone. For most, if not all, of his career, Cappadonna, has also walked alone. Yes, he’s been affiliated with the legendary Wu-Tang Clan but it was always an unofficial role, that is, until recently. Yet, his new official status with the Clan doesn’t mean that Cappadonna will be slowing down. In fact, he is more independent than ever before.
Sixshot spoke to Cappadonna about his new status with Wu-Tang Clan, finally getting his financial cut in the group, his real thoughts on the group’s recent album 8 Diagrams, his upcoming clothing line with Xavier Art, new album, The Capitalize Project, and more.
Sixshot.com: I heard that you just became an official member of Wu-Tang Clan. So how does that feel for you?
Cappadonna: There’s always a toss up between an official member and I don’t know—but my thing is that I’m just right now a universal soldier. I don’t belong to any kind of organization. I’m a free spirit.
Sixshot.com: So you don’t consider yourself an official member of Wu-Tang C
lan?
Cappadonna: I’m an official member of everything. I’m officially a member of your club.
Sixshot.com: I heard that you’re now in the financial cut of the group which was an issue in the past with RZA.
Cappadonna: You gotta be able to take the good with the bad. We are gonna do everything in our power that we can to make sure this doesn’t happen, and also to recover the benefits that we may have lost in between time. But there’s no love lost—life goes on.
Sixshot.com: I’m sure that the financial issues must have created a rift between you and Wu-Tang Clan. So now that the financial aspect is solved do you feel closer to the group?
Cappadonna: I don’t feel a little more closer to the group because we grew up since we were ten years old. I always felt like a member regardless of the income status. I just love to do what I do. I'm gonna always be a part of that, regardless.
Sixshot.com: Some of the Wu-Tang Crew members expressed disappointment with 8 Diagrams. How did you feel about that album?
Cappadonna: I had disappointments with it but it’s just another accomplishment through the ups and downs, which will always be apparent in life on all levels no matter what. I felt like it could have more added to it—more love. But we were given that gift and fortunate to be able to do that after all the time we been separated and through many differences of life.
Sixshot.com: Is there a chance for another Wu-Tang album?
Cappadonna: I don’t know about that right there—that has yet to be seen. I think that last one was it, but you never know. I thought the end of the world was 2000. [Laughs]
Sixshot.com: You’re now venturing out and working on a clothing line.
Cappadonna: I’m doing a clothing line with Xavier Art. It's gonna be urban attire and some real nice stuff that Cappadonna wears. Cappadonna stands for all people—don’t oppress nor neglect anyone. We don’t neglect anyone. So I'm incorporating that clothing line so that I can have something to give back that’s created independently.
Sixshot.com: Does that connect with the Better Life Movement?
Cappadonna: Yes it’s all part of that. It’s about bettering life right now and doing better, and getting better by taking control of your own situation. It’s about making the right connects and connecting the dots so that everything can fall into place. It’s for the construction and renewal of a better life.
Sixshot.com: What inspired this project?
Cappadonna: I spent a few years down in Baltimore. It's really rough down there like how New York was back in the 1980’s. I came across some others in the grime—some of my good brothers who have the fear of God and trying to do something positive. I connected with them and they had thoughts, and with my collective thoughts we took something that was sitting around into fruition. Now it’s a part of something and part of the movement that we established from nothing. We’re creating a buzz and getting better right now. So that’s what it’s about.
Sixshot.com: What kind of projects are you aiming to do with this movement?
Cappadonna: We do it all. We are entrepreneurs. We reach out and put the message out about oneness and unity through the music, through clothing, through books, and anything else. That’s why it's a better life movement. I didn’t want to base it upon one part of life. It's everything. You might just need a big brother and we have somebody right there that you can call to give you some big brother advice. My number is available for contact on MySpace if somebody really wanna reach out for certain inquiries.
Sixshot.com: I also hear that you’re very spiritual. How would you describe that spirituality?
Cappadonna: I do study religion cause it’s a big part of life. I know a lot of people are caught up in the following of certain religions. For me, it’s about the oneness with God and with the people. I can deal with people on any level whether they are a bum, rich man, or speak a different foreign language, handicapped, or any disability. I can still relate to you cause I respect your life and my life.
Sixshot.com: You’ve had struggles in your own life and career. What was the toughest challenge for you?
Cappadonna: I think the toughest for me out of the struggles is just me. I'm always trying to better myself and sometimes even in doing so I fall short too. So I just feel like I could be doing much more, but circumstances and situations hold me back. But that’s all a state of mind.
Sixshot.com: So where are you now along that journey now to advancing your life and career?
Cappadonna: Right now, even though I'm not too financially well I feel victorious because I set a goal from years back to become independent and that quitting is not an option. I pulled it off and I accomplished it and it feels good. I had some help but even with that help I had I inspired that help; to be able to unify with me and to help me help them, and to help us help each other.
Sixshot.com: What can we expect from you in the near future?
Cappadonna: The Capitalize Project is out now and it’s a nice well-rounded soulful album. It’s about capitalizing and being able to have strength and move forward when you’re very low. It’s grassroots and that’s the direction I’m headed in.
Sixshot.com: Any final words?
Cappadonna: I just want to give a shout out to everybody out there that ain’t quitting and it’s not in their heart. Shout out to them today and to all of the Virgos.
