All we hear about nowadays is how the day of the four-song demo is dead. The days of running up in your favorite record label and waiting a week just to spit a verse are dead. The days of slipping your vinyl to a DJ are dead. And while it is partially true, there are still cool stories to be told that pop up every once in a while.
Big Sean is a perfect example of that. He’s just a kid from Detroit. He had no industry connections, not much buzz, and hadn’t scanned 50,000 units independently. All he did was rap. It was one fateful day when he caught Kanye West at a radio station where Kanye would let Sean rhyme for him on the spot. Kanye, so impressed with the young bucks abilities invited him to a listening party and the rest is history.
The rhymes that were spit in that hallway on the way out of the radio station made Big Sean a label mate to Kanye West and Common. He is now officially a member of the G.O.O.D Music team.
Sixshot.com caught up with the newly signed artists to discuss how he got signed, having to leave his partner behind, and what we can expect to see from him in the future.
Now, you’re signed to G.O.O.D music. How come we haven’t heard more about it?
I really just officially signed to them about a month ago. Ya’ll will definitely be hearing more about it r
eal soon.
Where are you from Sean?
Detroit man, Detroit, Michigan.
So how did you actually get up with Kanye that you were in a position for him to sign you?
It’s a long story man. People think Kanye is my cousin or I knew him or something but I didn’t know anybody man. I met him at a radio station. I was in a rap group with my best friend. Every Friday we would go to this radio station in Detroit. At the time it was 105.9, now it’s 102.7. There was a show called 'Friday Night Cipher'. You would have to battle people to get on the air and then they would let the best rappers on the show. We would get to spit a 16 or maybe a couple of verses. Basically, my partner and me did that for a few months and we built a real good relationship with the radio station. At the time, I had a job, I was doing telemarketing. I was at the bank one day cashing like a hundred dollar check from work and my boy hit me up and told me that Kanye West was at the radio station and that I should go rap for him.
I told him I had to go to work but my boy was convinced that if I rapped for Kanye that he would sign me. He kept pushing me to do it so I got off the line at the bank, went home to grab a CD, and I picked my boy up. Like half way to the station he was getting off the air. He was there promoting Late Registration. I didn’t think he would be there when we got there but when we showed up he was still there. Like I said before, we had gotten real close with the radio station and they let me in the back offices where the artists chill and shit. As he was leaving I grabbed him by the shoulder and told him that I was an aspiring MC and I asked him if I could rap for him real quick. He was like, “man, I really ain’t got the time”. I was like, “Please man, you’re my inspiration and shit”.
He asked me if I had a 16 and told me to rap while he was walking out. I said yeah and I started rapping as he was walking out with all his managers and bodyguards. I was just rapping and rapping and when he got to the entrance he stopped and looked at me. I looked at the ground because I didn’t wanna get nervous and mess up. 16 bars turned into 100 bars and he was really feeling it. Before he left, he invited me to his listening party for Late Registration but it was at a secret location and he left without telling me where it was. I’m running around the radio station trying to find out where the secret location is and everybody was like, “It’s a secret location, how we supposed to know?” I thought my chance was over and that I missed my shot.
As I was getting into my car, I opened the door and some kid pops out of his car and he was like, “Yo, you that kid that rapped for Kanye? You going to the listening party”? I told him that I was trying to but I didn’t have the location. He had it and he gave it to me so I just went straight there. I was like 17 then and I signed to him when I was like 18 or 19 so it wasn’t an overnight process.
Were you nervous having to rap for him on the spot like that?
Man, yes sir. I was star struck. I had never met a celebrity up close and personal like that. The first time I met Kanye or Jay-Z, I was just appalled. I couldn’t even remember some of my raps and shit because I was so nervous. Now, he’s like fam. He’s my mentor and shit.
How did the signing actually go down?
I was in a group and eventually we got flown out to New York to meet John Monopoly. They listened to our stuff and they gave us some tracks to take home. When we sent those back to them they said they just wanted to sign me because they were looking for a solo artist and I fit more of what they were trying to do. It was a bittersweet type of thing because I wanted to get on with my group. My man told me that if one of us got on it would make it that much easier to put the other one on. It was crazy because he was the one who would drag me to the radio station and make me go real hard with the rap thing. I didn’t even really have a passion for it, he gave me that. I owe a lot to him. It was a bittersweet moment man.
Was signing to them a good move financially?
They definitely took care of me; I’m not broke anymore. I’m not rich though.
Do you feel you’re in a good position being signed to such a big label with such popular artists?
Yeah, there’s always a sense of being nervous as far as your stuff goes but I feel like I’m on the best team as far as hip-hop goes. Common, Kanye, I feel like this has the potential to be like a dynasty. That’s the label I wanted to be on before I even met Kanye. I wanted to be on that label or a label just like it. It’s like a dream come true for me so it was a great move.
Are you gonna be working on a lot of Kanye beats?
Yeah, I mean I got one or two Kanye beats for the album. I got some production by Pharrell. The majority of the album was actually produced by WrighTrax.
Aight man, so what are you working on that we can check for?
If you don’t have the mixtape already, go get that. It did real well in the ratings and all that. There’s features from Kanye, Bentley, and a bunch of other people. It’s a good mixtape. We droppin’ the video “Getting’ Some”. We shot it in Tokyo, Japan and some of it is Los Angeles. The album should be out later this year, early next year at the latest. I can’t wait man; it’s like a dream come true. It’s coming out on Island/Def Jam.
Anything you wanna say to the fans out there?
Just give me time and don’t lose interest in me. This takes time so keep giving me time and showing me love. I definitely appreciate everything I get. Shout out to Sixshot.com and you Jon for interviewing me.
