I saw Nicki Minaj’s picture, then I heard her music, then I realized her name was Minaj, so I set up the interview. All joking aside, besides being beautiful and having that sweet, round the way girl, type of personality, Nicki Minaj is definitely talented.
She writes all her own lyrics and has a knack for being creative, even in an oversaturated hip-hop market. Starting out by just posting freestyles on her MySpace page, she was discovered by Fendi of Dirty Money Entertainment and creator of The Come Up DVD series. Lil Wayne saw the footage and the rest is history.
Nicki Minaj is now the newest and only female on Young Money Entertainment. With her lyrical abilities, killer looks, and a personality to match, I would say Nicki is the closest thing to a sure best in the industry today.
Sixshot.Com caught up with the first lady of Young Money to discuss working with Lil Wayne, writing her own lyrics, and of course, her sex appeal.
So Nicki, what were you doing before you got signed?
Before I got signed I was doing a lot of DVD’s and a lot of freestyles.
When did the DVD’s start noticing you to put you on?
My situation is rare because I
didn’t do anything until I got on my first DVD because I really wasn’t up on the underground circuit. Fendi came to my Myspace page and he saw me and he liked the music. He wanted to sign me to Dirty Money and being that he does the Come Up DVD, he started putting me on every DVD. The first DVD, the Come Up 11: The Carter Edition is where Lil Wayne saw me.
Cool, so how did the deal with Lil Wayne actually go down?
Wayne called Fendi and told him that he liked me and wanted me to be on Young Money and that was it.
A lot of people feel Wayne is the hottest rapper in the game right now, so what does it feel like to be signed to him?
It’s great, it’s really exciting, and I’ve been a fan of Wayne forever. I didn’t have to send him a demo or call him. He saw me and called me, which makes it even bigger for me because he is the hottest rapper out.
Word is, you write your own material, true?
Every single thing. Yeah, I always wrote my own stuff.
Did any other female rappers influence you when you were coming up?
Yeah absolutely, the main ones like Kim, Foxy, and Missy because of her creativity. I’m very playful so I draw inspiration from Missy too.
You do get some comparisons to Lil Kim, how do you feel about that?
She’s the queen and we still talk about her all this time. People still mention her as the best so if I’m being compared to the best I must be doing something right. I’m definitely not mad at it.
Have you started working on the album yet?
Yeah, I work on a few things for the album but to be honest, I haven’t really put all my focus on the album because I really wanna do my underground thing. A lot of people wanna put a single out and they just jump out there and they become a one hit wonder. I want to build my fan base first so when I come out, people already know me and they already like me. I have been working on it but I’m not there every night working on the album. If I come across some original beats then I do something but I’m really working on the Sucka Free mixtape.
Absolutely, so you’re going to have a lot of resources, do you have any people you want to work with for the album?
I definitely wanna work with Swizz Beatz and Polow The Don.
As a new female artist, do you think it’s going to be difficult to get the fans to stand up and pay attention?
No, I think I’m bringing something that’s fresh and I think people are already paying attention. It’s funny because I only did one mixtape so far and I’m getting attention like I did ten mixtapes. I don’t think I’ll have a problem once people realize that I’m really spittin’ and it’s not just about sex appeal. I don’t think it’s gonna be a problem.
That’s my next question, is the sex appeal important for a female MC?
It’s important for me, I can’t really speak for anyone else. It’s become synonymous with me especially since my name is Nicky Minaj. Now, when I go out, people want to see me look sexy. It’s important to me.
You said you’re working on some stuff, can we get some details?
This one is called Sucka Free and it’s hot. This is gonna be like my introduction to the history book because when people hear this they’re gonna know that Nicki Minaj is gonna be around for a very long time. There’s a lot of thing with Wayne on there and I hold my own on everything. It’s fun and everybody is gonna be able to like it. It’s good music with singing and spitting; it’s just very creative. You’re not gonna pick it up and hear the same thing, it’s very different. I took “Coffee Shop” and made is “Coochie Shop” so it’s a lot of fun stuff on there. Then we got My Autobiography, which is real, real personal and I think people are finally gonna get to know me, the real person, not a caricature, loud mouth, lunatic.
What is it like working with Wayne?
It’s a lot of fun being around somebody very special. Even though I’m a Young Money artist, I never get used to being around him because he’s so good at what he does. He’s in the studio and besides not writing things down, he’s just dope. I’m very inspired by him. Being in the studio and just being around him is like being around a mentor.
You said you sing also, is that gonna be heavy on the mixtape?
No, we just have a couple hooks, so if you hear those, it’s me signing them.
You are good looking, very good-looking, and I get the feeling you’re gonna try and take it to acting and other things, am I right?
Yeah, I studied acting for four years, acting is my first love. Everybody better get ready to see me on that big screen. I just don’t plan on just being a rapper when I’m thirty years old. The acting gets showcased in all my videos, like if you watch the “Warning” video, that’s all acting. I’m definitely gonna start doing some things. I’m not an artist that wants to act; I’m an actress that raps. I wanna make that very clear.
Have people been approaching you already?
Yeah, but I’m trying to be real strategic as a rapper. I want to be believable so I don’t wanna do anything too drastic that takes away from the Nicki Minaj character. I want people to get to know this character then I’ll switch and do what I gotta do later on.
Alright Nicki, anything you wanna say to the fans at Sixshot.com?
I wanna tell everybody thank you for the support, I’ve been getting so much love. I’m from New York and I’m getting love from everywhere. I also wanna let all the little girls know that you can come in this game, write your own shit, be sexy; it doesn’t matter as long as you respect yourself. Shout out to Dirty Money and Fendi and Young Money and Lil Wayne. And a shout out of course, to Sixshot.com. MySpace.com/Nickiminaj
