Beg to differ...
"Champion Requiem" is definitely iPod worthy, although I'm not so sure about "Life is Real". "Zimzallabim" is a much better song than recognized. Move past the rock backdrop (which, by the way, is vastly underrated) and listen to Mr. Smith's lyrics. Contrary to popular opinion, the rapped verse of "War" is vintage Mos. Peep a certain portion:
"Nobody told me Death was so damn fine
I go to sleep with that girl on my mind
Wake up and I see her on the firing line
I grab my heat and it's get down time
One day I'ma make that girl all mine
But for now I'm a soldier abidin' my time
Writin' my rhyme behind enemy lines
Palestine, Kosovo, Cashmere
No different than the avenues right here
An increase in the murder rate each year
Paramilitary unit keep the streets clear
Curtains up on the theatre of warfare
Dramatic politics nightly preformed here
Worldwide from Colombia to Columbine
Gun holders keep the dollar signs on the line"
Now think about his classic verse on "Thieves in the Night."

Snooze
This album will go down in the annals of hip hop music as one of the most slept on just because Dante decided to do something different. It isn't "Black on Both Sides", but it's groundbreaking (if not classic) in its own right.

Hot Shit!
As it's been said already, this album takes time for some. I played it from start to finish the day I got it. It defintely is an ecclectic taste but oh so refreshing! Damn I can not tell you how excited I am to hear something other than the bullshit that is being passed for "music" in general today. Need I say Gucci Mane?!

why mos is disliked
mos def isnt liked globally because of the downward progression of rap. now everyone has to either be a "gangsta", an R&B star, or a rich peron raping about their money. mos isnt like that. he is so lyrical it is insane. and if you hate on mos, then dont call yourself a rap fan.

WRONG
You are wrong. You are missing the whole point of the album. I can't put this new album down, I think it is one of the best albums I have ever heard. In my opinion, the reason why the rock sounds "lame" and the beats seem to skip around is because he is saying screw the new age rock and listen to what I have to say...and what he is saying is be real not some fake. New age rock sucks and is fake and everyone has sold out. Mos Def wants us to remember his legacy and the great lyrics he has put out. Mos even says the rock is lame and his sound is what it is all about. You need to really listen to this album before dissing him. This album is for music lovers...not tools...like yourself. Get you sh*t straight, then retype the review.

It'll grow on you
The first time I listened to the album, all I heard was the rock n' roll....and I was kind of pissed. But after a few listens, the way that the rock was incorporated into the music is genious....it's hip-hop. Don't get me wrong, there is one track on the album that is a little too "headbangers ball" for me, but the album is a work of art. You have an MC that is going outside of the norm and broadening musical horizons, which is why it took me a few listens to appreciate it. 5.5 out of 6.

Nice shit.
I'm a Mos Def fan. Mos Def did some nice shit. He has the tightest flow and spits tight lyrics. Zimzallabim wasn't so bad, it was sort of funny and okay, it's one of my favorite songs in The New Danger. My favorite song is Champion Requiem, it's fire, the beat is great and the lyrics are tight. I didn't like Blue Black Jack, Bedstuy Parade & Funeral March, and the Easy Spell. Those were the only songs I didn't like, the rest I loved them. Buy this album if you want real hip hop with some rock and blues with The Beautiful Struggle. Mos Def and Talib Kweli should drop another classic Black Star album, that would be great.

I respectfully disagree
I LOVE The New Danger!!! I think it's different, yes, but good nonetheless. And The Panties?!?!?! BEST SONG ON THE CD! Followed closely by Boogie Man and Ghetto Rock. The CD is VERY sexy, but perhaps that's a feminine point of view. I can believe that more than a few women were 'moist' at the concert. As a fan, he definitely didn't disappoint me.

I JUST SAW THIS NIGGA LIVE!
I had the album...and a lot of whut Premo was sayin I was feeling...till I saw the man live.....When he did "the panties"...all Ima say was that every gurl there was like "splash"....I'm feelin the rock influence a lot more having seen it live, tho..I would have originally given it a 3 out of sixshots but now its more like 5 out of sixshots....it grew on me....

I'm with Premo on this one
Yeah, Premo got it just about right. Put this album on random and its just about aight but it definitely ain't no "Black on Both Sides." Personally, I ain't even feeling Ghetto Rock but I'm digging that Panties song. I think that be that native language in their sentences Mos always talking about. Someone said that rapeover track ought to be on a mixtape and thats about right too. No self respecting Mos should have put that on a full studio album. And I know Mos is trying to upstage Limp Bizkit and all the whihte rap/rock cats, but he needs to come more correct with than this to do the track; maybe study "The Seed 2.0" by the roots or some shit like that so he can come correct. That Zimzallabim track ain't nothing to mess with after a couple listens though he could have left out the heavy intro. And I'm feeling Close Edge, the Begger, Bedstuy, Parade & Funeral March, Champion Requiem, Sex, Love and Money and reluctantly I'll add Grown Man BI and Sunshine. The Sunshine beat is hot but no way its Kanye's best this year. How you gonna come with something so overused to the table trying to serve it like tonight's cooking? Like the wack rock beats and the overused blues chords for Black Jack, Mos just needs somemore original work for this album. I must say that Black Jack is saved by the fact that the dude CAN sing. I saw him rock Central Park this Summer with nay a rap track and that was one of the best shows I ever seen. He just sang that shit and everybody left vibing like it was on. Might have got me some panties out of that evening.

I love this album
this is a great album sure the rock songs take time to get used to. i have to agree with the other person who posted, who said that the reviewer like rap and not hip hop. I bet if mos talked about hoes, weed, clothes, money and the size of his rims he would get played in every club in america, and get a better review. that crap aint hiphop its GARBAGE and does not make you think at all. mos defs album is great and the panties is one of my favorite songs.

As much as I'm startin to feel this album
This album is mostly non-hip-hop. And that's no a diss, that's just speaking on the genres. There is noway in heel Zimzallabim, The Beggar, or Black Jack can be considered hip-hop.

Growth
The first time I played this joint I was like, "What da hell?!?". But then I gave it a second chance and just allowed my man Mos do his thing and go along with the ride. I fuggin love this album. I am so glad that my own growth has given me the ability to listen beyond the first 30 seconds of a joint before I pass judgement. If most of you cats did the same it might actually scare you to realize how hot this album really is.
Hip hop is not what you heard 5 years ago or what some "Hot" producer thinks you should be feeling. Hip Hop is your own artistic expression of the life you are living and the world you live in. Alot of you cats don't feel this album because you are rap fans, and are not hip hop fans.
Peace

umm, i thought...
I thought the songs that a couple of songs on the album were HOT. I especially liked "Sunshine" and "Sex Love and Money". And I liked panties. I think the rock was a little much for me, but I did like "Ghetto Rock".
He was "fresh without a brand new song", though... hehe.

New Danger
IMO, this album was a HUGE disappointment. I'm suprised to see it got a higher rating than Kweli's "Beautiful Struggle."
