“Underrated–to rate low, or underestimate.”
That right there is what defines one of the best lyricists’ in Hip-Hop right now, Queens-bred MC, Pharoahe Monch.
In a world filled with “A-B-C” formats, Pharoahe continues to push himself and his listeners lyrically with his complex delivery and multi-syllabic rhyme schemes. Maybe that’s the reason why he can go unnoticed at times, but for those that do recognize him, they’re always well rewarded with material that they can appreciate.
Case in point, the work that he did on his song "Desire", from his sophomore album with the same name:
Comprehend the guide lines/
My chest out chinchilla on relaxed on the sidelines/
I’m so famous, understand/
New York City respect my game like Joe Namath/
And I protect my name like yo anus/
In prison/y’all don’t hear me, y’all don’t listen/
Y’all just wanna shine, y’all just wanna glisten/
Floss/knowing that the soul is still missin’/
(Who am I?)/I’m the poetical pastor/
Slave to a label, but I own my masters/
Still get it poppin’ without artist and repertoire/
Cause Monch is a monarch, only minus the A&R/
When my brain excels, ya train derails/
Pop sh*t/make you feel the Clipse like Pharrell/
You will feel me, you will admire/
(My) Struggle, (my) hustle, (my) soul—Desire/
