Stepping into HBO's The Wire as the brutal killing machine named Chris Partlow, Gbenga Akinnagbe instantly became a fan favorite to avid viewers of the Emmy winning show.
His character's icy demeanor and chemistry with his partner in crime Snoop (played by Felicia Pearson) brought a whole new dynamic to the show that has yet to be matched.
The former employee of a non-profit agency who now sends chills down the spine of The Wire fans recently chooped it up about the importance of education and of course, the final season of The Wire.
Sup man, how you doin'?
Everything is good man.
So tell us, how did you get into acting?
I used to work for the federal government in D.C. , I became curious about acting and started researching it, I sought out auditions and started going on them, I booked a play in D.C. and had to resign my position with the government.
You went to college, and worked a 9 to 5, what made you want to stop that routine?
I liked my job, I was helping people, but I didn’t feel comfortable in a 9 to 5. I think no matter what field a person wants to be in, music, acting president, they should go to college and get a degree, it teaches you how to think in different ways.
You've done theatre, how
does it compare to television?
Theater and television are so different. In theatre you get thrill of performing in front of a live audience, and that is exciting, with TV, you know you are working in a medium that reaches millions, that is thrilling in a different way, I dig them both
You were also in Barbershop: The Series. Why do you think that show didn't last?
That was all network politics.
How did you get the part on The Wire?
I sent my head shot in, they had me come in and audition. They brought me in many times to audition for many different roles over the course of a year or so. I was really lucky to become a cast member on such a quality show.
The Wire really shows people the reality of the street life. Were you exposed to that as a kid?
Yes, and having lived it, I know its nothing to glorify, the wire doesn’t do that, it shows the truth, good and bad
You're character is amazing, how have fans of The Wire responded?
They seem to dig it, and respect my work, I appreciate that. Some people get scared when they see me that makes me laugh.
Chris is a brutal type of dude; do you have any problem with playing such a violent character? I only ask because I remember hearing James Gandolfini say that he couldn't stand playing Tony Soprano anymore due to his violent nature.
The violence can sit in you like a heavy black residue, what helps me as an actor is the fact that Chris is does have things and people he cares about. He is a severe reflection of his environment. I liked playing Chris, he has many levels some of them violent, all of them deep,
You and Snoop have a great chemistry. How is your relationship off the set?
That’s my home girl, she makes me laugh all the time, sometimes between scenes, we slap box
I know you can't say too much, but what can we expect this season?
Its all going to pop off, this is going to be the doctor strange love season of the wire. You will see that no one is what they seem.
In your opinion, will this be the best season yet?
This is a fantastic season, but it’s going to be very difficult to beat season four.
We know Avon is coming back, can we expect a war between him and Marlo?
Crazy things can happen when the old king and the new king meet again.
Any projects you have coming up that we can look out for?
Check out the movie the savages, its in theaters now, its definitely a hot movie with Laura Linney, Phillip Boscoe, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and myself.
