Haitian born rapper/singer Wyclef Jean was reportedly appointed as a goodwill ambassador for his native country and awarded with a diplomatic passport at a ceremony held at New York club S.O.B.’s on Thursday night (October 18).
According to The Miami Herald, Haitian president Rene Preval issued Clef a red diplomatic passport in front of friends and well wishers including Russell Simmons and Haiti’s ambassador to the United States, Raymond Joseph, who is also the entertainer’s uncle.
During his acceptance speech, Wyclef joked that New York police should take notice that he is officially a diplomat.
Jean is well known for actively supporting his native country and creating the foundation Yéle Haiti to provide humanitarian aid and assistance to Haiti.
During the ceremony, Jean talked to MTV about his working relationship with the Atlanta bred rapper T.I.
Clef produced two songs on T.I.’s latest album, T.I. vs. T.I.P. T.I. served as co-executive producer of Clef’s upcoming album, Carnival Vol. II: Memoirs of An Immigrant , and also appears on the song "Slow Down".
“[T.I.] has that gift. When he speaks, w
hatever he speaks about, you can feel it. And beyond feeling it, he really lived it,” Clef said. “I grew to like him a lot. I got attached to him, and he's someone I would definitely ride for”
Carnival Vol. II: Memoirs of An Immigrant is slated for release on December 4th.
T.I. is currently in federal custody on gun charges and will be due in court next Friday to make his third plea for bond and immediate release.
