Details surrounding T.I.’s arrest on Saturday afternoon (October 13) have emerged.
Earlier reports had alluded that T.I. was arrested at his home yesterday by federal agents.
According to CNN, T.I. was arrested Saturday at a shopping center parking lot in midtown Atlanta while trying to purchase a machine gun and two silencers.
During his arrest, authorities searched his Atlanta home where they found six guns in his bedroom closet. The rapper is a convicted felon on seven year probation, thanks to a drug and illegal firearm possession charge he picked in the late 90’s. Felons are not allowed to own weapons.
A bodyguard who had reportedly worked with T.I. since July, co-operated with the
Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives after being arrested by an undercover agent on Wednesday (October 10) trying to purchase the machine gun and two silencers.
The bodyguard would tell the ATF that T.I. arranged for him to pick up $12,000 in cash from a bank to buy the guns. He also said that he had bought nine guns for the rapper in the past.
The authorities would then record the bodyguard holding a series of conversations with T.I.
The bodyguard then arranged a meetin
g in the aforementioned Atlanta parking lot for T.I. to pick up the guns. The guns were ‘not registered on the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record as required by law.’
The arresting officers also found three other guns in the car that T.I. drove to the parking lot.
“Machine guns pose a serious danger to the community, which is why they are so carefully regulated,” said the U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Georgia, David Nahmias. “ The last place machine guns should be is in the hands of a convicted felon, who cannot legally possess any kind of firearm.”
“This convicted felon allegedly was trying to add several machine guns to an already large and entirely illegal arsenal of guns,” he added.
T.I. will remain in custody over the weekend and will appear in court on Monday (October 15).
T.I. was scheduled to perform at the BET Hip Hop Awards on Saturday at Atlanta's Civic Center but failed do so because of the arrest. He was nominated for nine awards including ‘Best Live Performance’, ‘Hustler of The Year and ‘MVP Of The Year’.
According to The Associated Press, T.I. won two awards. The show’s host, comedian Katt Williams, took the stage with Wyclef Jean as a replacement for the ATL rapper to perform the song “You Know What It Is”.
T.I. was also slated to perform his other hit , “Hurt”, with Busta Rhymes and Alfamega. Busta and Alfa took to the stage without him.
Common, who tied for an award win with T.I., showed support for his fellow rapper during his acceptance speech. The two recorded a song titled “Good Life” which was featured in T.I.’s fourth album, King.
“I salute my guy T.I., who also won, wherever he is,” Common said.
The BET Hip Hop Awards will air on Wednesday (October 17) at 8 p.m.
