Group Petitions The Recording Academy To Revoke Kanye West's 10 Grammy Nominations! printer friendly version Send this story to a friend!

Members of a group calling itself The Mindset Army have drafted a petition to The Recording Academy seeking to have Kanye West's name removed from consideration in the 10 categories in which he was nominated for Grammy Awards.

Concerned members of the hip-hop community have taken exception to the popular rapper/producer Kanye West's 10 Grammy nominations in light of recent developments with regard to the dubious nature of his recording processes.

In particular, a question has arisen as to whether or not Kanye West bought the song "Jesus Walks," which was nominated for both Best Rap Song and Song of the Year, from an Indianapolis-based rapper named Rhymefest.

While it is true that Rhymefest is credited as a co-writer on the track, it has never been made clear the exact degree to which he was involved, and recent developments suggest that he may have written and produced the track in its entirety and sold it to West, who re-recorded it for his debut album, The College Dropout.

While this process, sometimes referred to as "ghostwriting," is fairly common in other genres of music, it has always been frowned upon in the hip-hop community. Members of the group The Mindset Army (www.byroncrawford.com) feel that it would be disrespectful to hip-hop itself if Kanye West were to win an award, especially in light of his many past statements with regard to his capabilities as an artist.

They have drafted a petition (http://www.petitiononline.com/mindset/petition.html) to The Recording Academy (www.grammy.com) demanding that his name be removed from consideration in the 10 categories in which he was nominated for Grammy Awards.

"For him to pay people for rhymes, concepts, etc. is no big deal," says member chiseven (http://mystuntedgrowth.blogspot.com/), "but for him to act like he is the next G.O.A.T. of the rap game, which he does regularly, is inexcusable."

Crazy
Hearin that song. i liked it, but i was always under the impression of "where is going to go from here?" will he expand? If he ain't even write the song, he lost of whole lof credit. I wonder how true it is though. Can't believe everything you hear.. but he does feed us believeable evidence. On another not Jblaze- you mentioned you feel God has no place in hip hop. I know he does. I know he has a place in hip hop. Especially with hip hop haven consumed the world now, the right person will get out there and really deliver his message. Not just talk but walk. There are many example of Godly individuals in hip hop, just are not flawless as well as misread or misjudged! God knows how to get his message through whom he should choose, you just have to read a lil closer. You know? Can't be juding one upon perfection because we'd never fine em, but judge righteous judgement. not "religious" judgement. Spiritual. U feel me? Holla if you feel you wanna discuss this further...peace and blessing.

the story supposedly is that the other dude co-wrote....which is coo..madd rappers have "co-writers" (at least dude is given credit). My prolem witht he situation is that KW made it seem like he was the sole person to say Jesus....and make it a hit and recognizable contribution to Hiphop...my opinion is that using God's name in Hiphop is like using when you're reaching an orgasm...it emphasizes a point, but it has no place there.
