No matter what you think the hip-hop scene in the Bay area is still standing strong. The good thing about that whole region is that they indeed can stand on their own too feet on their independent grind. DJ Backside is what you call somebody that rides and represents for where she’s from. Even though a lot of times many DJ’s only flock to where the music is hot, DJ Backside is all about flipping the game as she says proudly of her Bay area hip-hop.

She even goes so hard putting the city on the map that her clothing line repping the area is coming in full effect. There is more to Cali than just L.A. so now it’s time to show love to the Bay. Now for this week’s Sixshot Spinner we present to you DJ Backside AKA the other side of the tape that’s hot.

Sixshot.com: I see you come from the Bay area and not too long ago I interviewed DJ Vlad who is also from there. So speaking on your behalf how you feel about the Bay right now?

DJ Backside: The bay hip-hop scene right now is under construction, but under construction means growth and that were working. A lot of people know about the hyphy movement over a year ago. We always been some independent soldiers, but were really under construction right now. Were are working on mixtapes, many projects, people are creating indie labels, we all just need to unify. That’s what the Bay needs to do to get it poppin right now and I definitely want to be part of that solution.

Sixshot.com: Don’t you find it crazy with the amount of rappers that got murdered in the Bay from the Bay area?

DJ Backside: Rappers yes! It’s real ugly in the streets out there and it’s a lot of economic problems and issues within the community that need to be handled. There have been a few rappers over the past couple years that been murdered. It’s real sad and real discouraging really.

Sixshot.com: Being somebody that reps the Bay hard, how you feel about the impact Mac Dre had on the Bay?

DJ Backside: Mac Dre had a huge influence on the Bay area before even when we talk about the hyphy movement and things like that. Mac Dre has been doing it for a while and you will find that any independent artist from the Bay you see that they put in they groundwork first. Mac Dre has been putting out mixtapes for a minute probably six years before he started Thizz Entertainment. The thizzin, the hyphy, the go dumb, get stupid, all that slang that you hear people say now came from him.

I got an opportunity to work with Thizz Ent for a bit and put out some Mac Dre mixtapes. That dude really has had an effect on the Bay area. Everybody had a Mac Dre shirt, even now it’s like a commodity to pay homage and respect. He will be a missed martyr in the Bay, from the hustle, the slang, the songs, Mac Dre is definitely going down in the history books forever like a Tupac.

Sixshot.com: Even though Mac Dre did his thing how you feel about E-40 and what he did?

DJ Backside: He still is doing it, as I said before any artist from the Bay that’s been doing it nationwide has been doing it for a while. Everybody in the Bay feels E-40, he is the ambassador. He’s always been the ambassador and has been giving the Bay more shine. “Tell Me When to Go” with Keak Da Sneak was definitely one of the premier moments in his career. Now he’s coming back with the new album early 2009 or maybe later. He really set an example that somebody can come out the Bay and do it on a national front. We really haven’t had no national exposure since “I Got Five On It” with the Luniz’s and that was like ten years ago.

Sixshot.com: What you think of the new cats?

DJ Backside: There is a lot of them, Mistah Fab, The Jacka, Sam Quinn, Big Rich, Keak Da Sneak all of those guys are the western breed. It’s a new breed on the west coast in the Bay and L.A. It is still the E-40’s, the Snoop’s, the Nate Dogg’s, DJ Quik’s, all them are still out there doing their thing. They doing the hustle a little bit different the way the veterans done it, but still getting in there. It’s cats out here in L.A. too like Glasses Malone, Bishop Lamont, it’s the western breed and we coming.

Sixshot.com: So talk about your history as to what made DJ Backside want to get in this game?

DJ Backside: I started actually when I was in college as I used to DJ in the college parties. I went to college on the east coast and when I moved back home to Oakland around 2003 that’s when the hyphy movement was getting recognition. I actually learned from the DJ’s on the east coast when to put out mixtapes. The mixtape was a real good way of how I got in the game putting out Bay area artist. It got me noticed out there from my street hustle and I got my own show on 106 KMEL which is one of the top five hip-hop stations in the nation.

I had my show on there for two years and that was one of the greatest opportunities in my career. That really opened up a lot of doors and radio if you use it to your advantage will open up great doors for any DJ. Everywhere I went whether it was on BET Spring Bling, Rap City, did a little spin on MTV for little bit. I traveled to Taiwan and Germany. It was always in the back of my mind to keep that Bay music out there. Becoming part of the industry out here really made me want to put this music on my back being a DJ.

Sixshot.com: What made you decide to do the whole clothing line Got Bay?

DJ Backside: Really the Got Bay thing was from when I started this mixtape called Got Bay. Those mixtapes sounded pretty good and I thought maybe I should have some T-Shirts to give out for promo. Everybody wanted them so it was basically supply and demand. It’s about having something that reps the Bay and that’s what it’s all about. Do You got The Bay in you? That’s what the whole line is gonna be about. Check out everything on www.djbackside.com

Sixshot.com: What’s the meaning behind DJ Backside?

DJ Backside: [Laughs], It’s basically what you think and that’s what I like to answer it as. I chose it for several reasons, but it’s DJ Backside AKA b-Side. You know the b-Side of a record flipping the game and it is what it is
