Sixshot Spinners: DJ Green Lantern printer friendly version Send this story to a friend!

The substance that has long greased the wheels for Hip-Hop has been the DJ. The unsung hero that sometimes goes unnoticed due to the fact of the superstar they're backing up basking in all of the glory. For the most part, those days are a thing of the past thanks to DJ's emerging as artists in their own right.

Many have went from mastering the 1's and 2's to manning a switchboard in a studio, but one person who took a reverse route going from a producer to turntable technician happens to be Rochester, New York inhabitant James "Green Lantern" D'Agostino

The Evil Genius (as he's sometimes called) has touched base with all aspects of the music industry by being a DJ, producer, and an on-air personality. Once affiliated with Shady Records, he now finds him at the helm of his Future Green Entertainment Company, and also the person behind the soundtrack for the most recognized videogame on the planet known as Grand Theft Auto Liberty City.

Recruiting such names as Wyclef Jean, Fabolous and Juelz Santana for the project, the man of Italian and African-American descent still has time to lend his talents to summer events like the 'Rock The Bells Tour' and 'Nas' Jones Experience Tour'-and at that rate, making other's envious of his success shouldn't take long whatsoever.

SixShot.com: How did you get involved with Rockstar games in order to make the soundtrack?

Green Lantern: They came to me, and wanted me to produce a radio station and present the music as a DJ on the radio. You know when you're in the car on the game; you can turn on the radio and switch around to different stations. So they wanted me to be a DJ on the radio, and they already knew that I produce records too. So they just wanted to put it all together, and present them on a particular radio station for the game. From there, it turned into all of the exclusive music, so I put it out as an album. So there's music in the game, and then additional music, which we put out and it's also on iTunes and it's called Music Inspired By Grand Theft Auto pt 4.

SixShot.com: Are you a big fan of the game yourself?

Green Lantern: I mean. YEAH! [Laughing] That game is a staple of society at this point. It's all about Grand Theft Auto, you know?

SixShot.com: [Laughs] Did you go through any particular process when you were deciding whom you wanted featured on the project?

Green Lantern: With the game being based in New York City this time, I wanted to keep it true to form, so I concentrated on having New York artists who have that aggressive edge. That's why you have a "Uncle Murda" on there, you have a "Maino" on there, you got a "Styles P" on there, and you got a "Busta Rhymes" on there; and I wanted artists like that. So I purposely set out to do that, and just to make sure I had that aggressive flow on there, you know what I mean?

SixShot.com: You basically produced all the songs right?

Green Lantern: Yeah, I sure did.

SixShot.com: When did you first try your hand at production?

Green Lantern: Well I started producing before I was a DJ. So I had a good four years of producing before I even thought about being a DJ, and before I even started DJ'ing I wanted to make beats. When I was making beats, I would be digging for samples all the time, and it just went from there.

SixShot.com: Is there any one beat on the album that you produced that happens to be your favorite?

Green Lantern: I would probably say the Busta Rhymes song, 'Where's My Money.'

SixShot.com: Plus you're working on the 'Yes We Can' mixtape with Russell Simmons in support of Barak Obama. Have you always followed politics?

Green Lantern:
I haven't really followed politics that much, but I feel that a change is needed, so that's why I decided to throw my support out there.

SixShot.com: Do you think there's any particular reason why so many people are behind him?

Green Lantern: I just think he will be able to provide a drastic change from the bullsh*t that's been going on for the last eight years. I think more people should be in support of Barak [Obama] because George Bush did such a bad job, and it ended up affecting everybody.

SixShot.com: You're on the radio; you're touring, and producing. Does it ever get too much for you to handle?

Green Lantern: It doesn't get too much to handle or hectic at times. I do manage to catch some shut-eye here and there. Right now I'm on the 'Jones Experience Tour' with Nas, and I provide the music besides DJ'ing for Nas. Sometimes I warm up the crowd, but not really because usually they have a house DJ, but I basically just provide some of the music before someone performs.
