It’s common knowledge that the South has had the hip-hop scene on lock for the last few years. There have even been sub-cultures within Southern hip-hop such as snap music. They’ve had megastars that have already fallen by the wayside. They’ve had one hit wonders. And the wave of Southern hip-hop has also produced some artists that will forever be etched into hip-hop history. One of those artists is Young Jeezy. Of course I’ll never know being a New York cat myself but form what I heard Jeezy had the streets on fire something fierce with his non-stop barrage of mixtapes.
It’s no surprise that his debut album Let’s Get It: Thug Motivation 101 sold 2.5 million copies worldwide and instantly became a hood classic. Thug Motivation is a fitting title as Jeezy is often praised for his believable lyrics. That is one of his best qualities and probably what endears him to his fans. Young Jeezy has even been called the new Tupac for his honesty, not being pretentious, and understanding of the struggle.
While many critics had a problem with Young Jeezy’s flow and there were complaints that he wasn’t lyrical I personally find them to be wrong in every sense of the word. Lyrical means you’re able to make the fan feel what you’re saying. It means relating to the fan and like I said that’s
Jeezy’s forte.
The first single, “Soul Survivor” produced by and featuring Akon was a smash hit and instantly landed Jeezy on the Billboard charts. “Go Crazy” was another standout track that featured hip-hop’s elite, Jay-Z. The album featured production by Jazze Pha, Nitti, Mr. Collipark, and Jeezy also further introduced his producer Shawty Redd to the world as he produced seven tracks on the album. “Gangsta Music”, “My Hood”, “Trap Star”, “Bang”, and “Trap Or Die” round out the album nicely. Say what you will whether you think there was too much talk of the trap, selling drugs, or the hood life in general but the bottom line is this album was bangin’ and set a nice path for Jezzy to do even greater things which he has continued to do so in the words of the man himself “Let’s Get It!”
