Your very young, at the age of 18 years old, but already part of a major DJ Crew which is the Cali Untouchbale DJ's. How you manage to get down with them, especially coming from overseas?
In early 2007 I released my first real mixtape featuring a couple of artists like Stat Quo and artists from Germany around my home city near of Frankfurt/Mannheim. After that I saw that Germany don’t have a real mixtape market, we don't have mixtape spots down here like you have in NYC.
So I was looking really forward to step my game up on an international level and I connected to a couple of mixtape DJ’s from NYC over Philly to Cali. DJ Warrior was really interested in the way I work with my age of 17 years and how I do my own marketing and promotion for my projects.
In September 2007, Warrior first signed me as part of Cali Untouchable Radio on Sirius 40 Hip Hop Nation as an artwork designer because I had my own company KFX running at that time. So after working for two weeks for him he was calling me on the phone like "Hey do you wanna be also part of the Cali Untouchable DJ's?" and I agreed. Now today it is very simple to handle the business via Myspace, Skype and AIM.
DJ Warrior is indeed of the big dogs of the crew, do you think your work ethic alone was what made them bring you along?
Yeah, I guess so. Warrior likes my promotion ideas and how I enforce my decisions. I also had that work ethic before I got signed so this is one of the reasons why Warrior signed me last year.
Would you say that the fact your a international DJ, made you stand out. Also was the main key with you being a part of Cali Untouchable DJ's was to brand the name in the overseas market?
Warrior was thinking of building up an international team at that time he also signed DJ Logikal from New Zealand. Warrior added me to the team in order to represent the Cali Untouchable DJ's the right way down here. Warrior has reached nearly everything you can reach as a DJ in the states at that time and so it was all about growing internationally. Another key was to build up a nice buzz which also was enforced well so Warrior will be in Germany in 2009 to do a small club tour I'm organizing.
I saw that your also affiliated with the Europe Untouchable DJ's, is that more of a crew to bring out and let the world see what hip-hop in that market is like?
The Europe Untouchable DJ's are currently just me and DJ Ant Live who is currently located in Frankfurt for a couple of years. We are about to do a few shows down here in order to create better contacts to the clubs we can use for performances in future. Our current aim is also to integrate Hip-Hop in the German society and build up a better mixtape market down here with more mixtape spots.
We also want to show companies how to promote themselves with mixtapes. Too less folks estimate the role of the DJ in Germany and we get paid badly down here in comparison to the states.
Of course, hip-hop is large over here in the United States. Every person involved in the culture had some sort of influence of why they love it and chose to stay in it. Your a DJ in a market that's continuing to grow over the years, but who would you say got you involved in DJing being where your from?
I involved myself into the whole business. At the early age of 15 I started going to jams and build up a small network in Germany which used at the age of 16 to do the project I mentioned above named "HP Mixtape". So the only artist who I wanna thank at the moment is DJ Clak. He made the whole mixtape a real good mixtape which introduced me to the whole scene showing off all my contacts worldwide on a single mixtape.
I peeped your mixtapes and which you support many big artists, but I like to know who is on the rise or considered dope out there?
Definitely in Germany too. There are a few cats down here which are doing good music... I would say the crew Boese Zungen located in Darmstadt are currently on the rise and also Sprachtot from Mannheim. But next to them I guess VI So Fly and Petebull who are also from Mannheim got next because they are really talented and they know how to do shows! But to name a few names from overseas: Gone & Manifest from NYC, Stik Gilatine, Epic, Stage, G. Malone and Quiz from the Blu Division.
The mixtape tape series you heavily grind and push is the DJ Big K Connected series, first of all where the title comes from and what type of hip-hop you try to stay connected to?
The idea for “Connected” was born in November 2007 with the aim to support new artists from the states and also show my connections to my folks down here. I was never really interested to work with big artists, because I'm fed up with all the major artists at the moment. So I wanted to give hip-hop a fresh breath with new faces who are on the rise and to let the folks know that I'm connected to the game worldwide.
Let's take it back real quick, it's kind of basic, but where Big K originate from?
The Big K originates from my name back in the days where my friends called me "K" which symbolizes the first letter of my family's name. So I thought I have to combine two of my attitudes. I'm 6’4 and still the guy from back in the days so my DJ name was born “Big K”.
Your moving fast and was just nominated for a Justo Mixtape Award for best "International Mixtape DJ".
Justo Faison has made a big impact in hip-hop's mixtape culture for many of you DJ's. Being an upcoming DJ how will you keep his legacy alive?
I never had really the chance to meet Justo, but it was a big surprise for me that I was nominated for the awards. So since I got nominated my designer puts his logo on all my mixtape covers in order to keep him alive and pay him the respect for the thing he dedicated his self for. Justo is one of the greatest persons in the hip-hop history so we all should pay him respect! R.I.P.
When you coming to the states to show us how you get down "International" style?
Maybe this October or next summer to spin a couple of times with Warrior, J. Rez and DJ Stone in L.A.'s clubs and meet all the artists I worked with so far. I'm sure to be in NYC next April, see you all at Justo's!
