Jonny Boy Speaks: Soulja Boy vs Ice T printer friendly version Send this story to a friend!

Soulja Boy Vs. Ice-T. Who woulda thunk it? I have to admit that the verbal attack of a 17 year old kid by men in their 40’s or in Ice’s case his 50’s is a little disheartening. I mean I’m 26 and I try not to bang 18-year-old girls anymore, the operative word being try, but I digress.

Truth be told, Soulja Boy is a talented little bastard. Whether you care to admit it or not there were a few weeks when you were referring to everybody as “Youuuuuuuuuuu”. The only reason you even stopped was because your middle aged boss asked if you were down to “Superman some hoes” that weekend. The funny thing is, when the fuck did everybody become a hip-hop buff? Half of you that fancy yourselves hip-hop heads really don’t know shit about the music. Most of you haters bought Illmatic in 1996, slow ass punks.

My official opinion is this; Ice-T shouldn’t have done what he did. It was corny to say the least. I know Ice is a legend and all but how many times can one play the legend card? Just because you did a lot for the culture doesn’t give you the right to try and tear it down. Can you have an opinion? Absolutely, because they’re like assholes and everybody has one. Having a good opinion is what truly matters and I don’t think Soulja Boy is the dude to go after if you’re trying to repair the state of hip-hop.

As a matter of fact I’m starting to think t he whole problem with hip-hop is the fact that everybody keeps saying that there’s something wrong with it. Use your energy elsewhere people and for more constructive purposes.

As far as Soulja Boy goes, I have nothing but good things to say about the kid. For somebody that age to be able to put together music like he does is pretty incredible in itself. He had a major hit record, went platinum, and most of all took his mother and siblings out of the struggle. How can anybody be mad at that? I could see if he was a little prick but he generally seems to be a pleasant little dude.

On to the age argument which has been a hot topic for a while.I hate to say it but if you’re pushing 40 and still rapping it’s a little sad. At 40 you’re supposed to be settling down with kids or banging 30-year-old models that are starting to get a little desperate. Rap isn’t one of those occupations where you can try to hold on to the glory days and come out on top. You’re gonna come out looking foolish like George Foreman minus being the strongest punching human being on the planet and holding the greatest title in the world.

In other words you’ll be yourself just a little fatter, a little balder, and a little more out of touch. Shit, you should be out of touch damn it. You should be in touch with things more suitable for your age instead of celebrating your 29th birthday 5 times followed by 15 birthdays where you never pass the age of 33. The older hip-hop heads have to learn how to pass the torch like it’s been in every aspect of life since the beginning of time. I’m about to make a harsh statement but Ice-T isn’t relevant to a lot of people anymore.

You can’t lay back in the cut, acting on Law and Order and expect the whole show to stop because you’re past your prime. Read some interviews and see what guys like Rakim, KRS-One, and Big Daddy Kane have to say about Nas, a dude who is much younger than them. I’m not comparing Nas to Soulja Boy but let the young dudes live. I think the older dudes hanging on so tight to the past are kind of holding up the future.

I also blame wack MySpace rappers for this as well because it’s a lot harder to find the true talent when you have to weed through so much nonsense; yeah I said it, nonsense. Damn this topic sent me off on a tangent. Here’s my bottom line. Ice-T was wrong. Soulja Boy has done some incredible stuff and the kid should be able to enjoy his success without all the “purists” putting down his style.

A little prediction also for all my fans out there. I can pretty much guarantee that Soulja Boy will only get better as time goes on and will have a career in the vein of a very successful Southern hip-hop artist who we all know. I won’t put the name out though so I can cover myself at least a little bit, ha ha. Anyway people, I’m signing out. Shout outs to Soulja Boy and I hope Ice-T works this out with the kid.
