1,000,002 Reasons (Entry #3)
1,000,000, it’s the number we all as free thinking people love to have in our bank accounts or in savings. Me? I’ll take both. But below are two things dealing with the colossal number that happened earlier this week. Both can be looked at as a stepping stone towards what we figured out long ago growing up and that is that anything is possible.
This entry was kind of a difficult one to accomplish due to the situations on my plate this past month. I’m going into the studio to record a new project. I’m hiring new interns and possibly a regular paid position to help out weekly when I’m not around the office or buried under the boards.
However, I wanted to say big ups to DJ Green Lantern and A. Shaw for getting the permits to have the Million DJ March in Washington D.C. This type of event has been a long time coming and hopefully this doesn’t turn into the world biggest party but instead provide vital and helpful information to our community of DJs.
Whoever the keynote speaker will be, don’t be corny with it. When I go I want to walk away with information about self-employment skills (even though I can do that now) but if all goes well we can.
Tuesday marked the day Lil’ Wayne sold over one million records and some media people have been calling it “the impossible”. I don’t think it’s the impossible. He practically put his life
on the line doing all the things that lead up to June 10th. I tip my hat to him and the Universal staff on showing all these up and coming artists that if the label is interested and the artist practically sacrifices his mind and his physical, he too can sell one million albums.
The industry exposed themselves on this one showing that they have the manpower and resources to make an artist sell like Lil’ Wayne. You just have to figure out if they feel like putting you out there at their expense. It’s going to be a happy day when recoupment comes around for this album because the marketing I’m sure was handled more on Lil’ Wayne’s back than Universal’s. All of this is purely speculative but just seeing how homie maneuvered his way into the top spot was mostly on propaganda and viral messaging and of course the daily media hounds. Hats off Weezy F. Baby.
Anyway, there will be some major noise to be made on my part starting in the next month or so. I’m working with an artist who was introduced to me and to be honest might possibly be a heavyweight contender when the dust settles and the ink is dry. I’ve had a lot of artists cross my path and this one has his own caliber of talents some of which I like and some if which I don’t like.
There’s no such thing as a perfect artist, especially if they are set in their ways that have been untouched for years and years with no mentors or guidance to break the routine. Just to touch briefly on artists, especially rap artists. It’s hard to work with an artist who has been used to for example only working when they drink or smoke.
It’s fine by me if it makes you focus on what your song is supposed to sound like and not a 5 hour experimental journey to the center of MC Weedies brains (Not fun).
Be on the look out for a trifecta of a news story in the next coming week. I’ll give you a hint. It involves three of the same name cats and one happens to be an Aftermath Ent. producer. Stay tuned. But to conclude you have some artists who can’t be adjusted so you ask yourself “What can I do, when it comes to a difficult chemistry with an artist, producer, etc. ?” The answer might surprise you. That’ll be the next entry a week from now. Shout out to Jon and Sixshot.com we got 3 in the can so far we can only get better baby!!!
