The man that won’t let the world forget his name returns with his second CD in two years. That’s correct, right after we stopped thinking about him, Mike Jones is back to tell everybody what his government name is with an EP titled American Dream.
The only reason why he probably only made this an EP instead of an LP is most likely he realized he doesn’t have a lot of subject matter left in his repertoire for another double-digit track album. None the less the six-song EP starts of with "Turnin’ Headz" which sounds like a revamped version of "Back Then", complete with redundant lyrics and repetitive hook.
Next up to bat is My 6-4 featuring Bun B. The only thing that saves this song is the fact Mr. Jones sampled Eazy E’s classic song "Boyz-N-The-Hood" and made decent rendition of it. The song starts off with Eazy’s legendary line; “Cruising down the street in my 6-4” just to get overshadowed by a screaming Mike Jones screaming; of course “Mike Jones.”
After he ends his dimsal verse by repeating the last line five times, Bun B steps in with something lyrical, and refreshes us with lines like; “I got love for the West coast/I suppose/I’m a head out to Cali/the land of the Lo-Lo’s.” Going down the line, is the third song titled "Mr. Jones" (how original is that). Anyways, after the child-filled
chorus fades out, he drops lines like; “I’m the king of the hill/I’m living that American Dream for real.” Enough said.
"Like What I Got" is more of the same but this time he adds in a chopped and screwed hook. That’s probably to cover up the fact that he’s saying absolutely nothing at all. Just more about him rolling on 24’s and how the haters keep on hating. Here’s a thought. Maybe they wouldn’t hate, if you were more creative.
Rounding out the EP is "Still Tippin’"featuring Slim Thug and Paul Wall and "Back Then". But wait. Weren’t those songs on his debut album Who Is Mike Jones back in 2005, which sold over a million copies? Yes they were. It seems that in a 2-year break from making albums Mr. Jones could only muster up four new songs, and one of them is remake of an N.W.A. classic, the only three sound the same, and then he has the nerve to put the same two hits from his first album onto this one.
Wow, if that isn’t a case of sheer laziness, then who knows what is. He was probably too busy buying 24’s and iced out medallions instead of working on his craft. Because at first listen to this album, it shows exactly that.
