The Eminem Show:

I’ve got one word that sums up my feelings of the Eminem Show: disappointed. I’ve got one word to sum up the majority of this new album by Em: uninspired. This album is a BIG let down considering the immense talent Em possesses. Its shocking and disapointing how mediocre this album is.

First, let me say straight up, I am an Eminem fan. I’m from Detroit. I straight up thought his first two albums were brilliant. Both of Em’s previous albums STAY in my trunk. That being said, I don’t know what the hell happened on this album. The themes on this album are for the most part redundant and, believe it or not, BORING. He mentions both Mrs. Cheney (Vice-President Dick Cheney’s wife) and Tipper Gore (Al’s wife) on this album...and references Mrs. Cheney more than once. Who cares? Who cares about the Vice-President’s heart problems (which he mentions on “Without Me”)? Its not shocking, it's boring. Something I never thought I’d say about Eminem. Eminem attacks Chris Kirkpatrick (from N’Sync) and Moby. Again, who cares. For a guy who out-rhymed Jay-Z on his own shit (as both I, Nas, and a lot of other fans genuinely believe) on “Renegades”, he’s decided to shoot fish in a barrel on "The Eminem Show". Not entirely surprising because he’s attacked Backstreet, Christina Aguilera, N’Sync, and Brittany Spears in the past. If you expected that he would step up and battle worthy opponents on “The Eminem Show”, prepare to be disappointed (save the possibility of a brewing beef with Canibus... see below).

First, let me start off with some of the good. “Superman” is tight, it’s entertaining, it’s disturbing. Its laid-back style is not the hardcore menacing flow than we’re used to hearing from Eminem when rapping about groupies (be they women or men). Otherwise, it’s pure Shady. It’s that misogynistic shit that makes you conflicted about how you feel about Shady: You like it, but you shouldn’t. Superman bounces....the cadence is reminiscent of a slightly slowed down “Jigga What, Jigga Who” but with Shady’s own unique lyrics and style directed squarely at the groupies. “Till I Collapse” definitely stands out. Timbaland is on the beat, with the “We Will Rock You” bassline/clap sample and Nate Dogg rocking the hook. Shady spits hardcore against a hardcore bassline against a hardcore hook. And it works. Shady’s fires his distinct intricate, complex rhyme pattern with worthy venom and passion at the jealous and lets everyone know that he is that battle MC that everyone hates because he is so good. It’s Shady at his battling BEST...in full attack mode and DEMANDING the respect he’s due. When he’s on this level few, if any, can fuck with him. "Say What You Say", with Dr. Dre and Timbaland is definitely one of the albums hottest tracks. Not just because of the lyrical beef they start with Jermaine Dupri (and further expose the beef Eminem has with Canibus which is exploited more fully on "Squaredance"), but because the lyrics, delivery, and production are all very well done. Eminem and Dre are spitting lyrical fire back and forth ("like Red and Meth") and show why they are rap's dynamic duo. Em doesn't need beef with other rappers and artist for a hot album, but tracks like this show that he's capable of a passion, fire, and lyrical genius that few can match.

The first single “Without Me” is average. Yes, its blowing up the radio and MTV now, but its success is more indicative of the current lack of good hip-hop rather than the tracks strength. “Soldier” is also average. “Soldier” works, and it doesn’t. Eminem is not a thug, he admits as much on the beginning of “Soldier”. He’s an MC and one of the best battle MC’s at that. He is not Tupac. Maybe this is his Pac tribute rap. One way or another, it’s interesting track in that it’s obvious where he wants to go with…let’s just hope he leaves the Soldier rap to the real ones....the ones who roll with their guns loaded. I appreciate Em's talent, but I’m not convinced...Equally average is “White America”. Em details his relationship with his fan base and their parents. With that title, I expected much more, and he could have done more with it. But he doesn’t. In the end, it’s redundant and tedious. Those of us who have his first two releases know that he's been spitting the message laid out in "White America" from Day One. Just not in such an obvious, preachy, heavy-handed tone as he does here.

Hailey’s Song is disturbing. Not for the content, which is passionate and understandable, but for its execution and its inclusion on this album. Eminem sings throughout the song. You’ve never heard anything like it from him. That’s not a good thing. It’s certainly a soul felt track dedicated to and about the love he has for his daughter Hailie Jade Matthers. Perhaps it's his form of penance for all the hate filled diatribes he’s directed at her mother on his last two albums and in the media. Straight up, it doesn’t work....I'm not saying Em can't do a heartfelt track...a "Keep Your Head Up", or a "Dear Mama"...but Hailey's song is bizarre and out of place. “Business”, “Sing for the Moment, “Cleaning out My Closet”, “The Showdown"...all fairly dull and uninspired.

This album should have been better. The last album had "Criminal", "Stan", "I Am", Bitch Please Pt. II...all superior material to most of the tracks on "The Eminem Show". "The Eminem Show" will still sell though. And other critics will undeservedly rate it much higher than I. I hope that Eminem will come back much stronger on his next album. Eminem is without question, one of the best lyricists and artists in hip-hop history. Without him, hip-hop does feel a bit empty.....but “The Eminem Show” does very little to fill the void.

**** out of SIXSHOTS

The strength of the albums' better tracks slightly outweigh the average-to-below average tracks. This album is nowhere near the classic level of its predecessors.

The real Eminem Show Review
first ya no snoop dog, strike one. two if you dont like the album dont give it 4 stars give it two. like pun said "this aint baseball". anyway "without me" see a trend buddy em always releases his first song to be commercial "my name is", "real slim shady", "purple pills" and now "my band" no different there. he switches up with 'sqaure dance" for the south and gets down with "soldier". "white america" is an intensified "stan" because now he doesnt just have fans backin him he has all of the american youth (his fan base grew see the analogy). and he always goes at people. the little people that nobody does. he did that in his last album so get used to it (real slim shady). that is what em is stirring up drama. he did a great job introducing obie on "drips" (who now has his own album and is gettin recognition thanks to this song). the difference between this album and the others is that this is a lyrical exhibition. he takes it up with his rhyming, flow and intensity (check the verse in "when the music stops" and the song "soldier" and "till i colapse". readers this is real review you gotta analyize and do your homework.
