Coming out of Tacoma, Washington, Azarel offers a real sense of cultural identity, laying out thick religious undertones while staying true to the ideals of modern urban life. Unlike many other hip-hop acts of today, AZ steers clear of the “bling-bling” attitude, spitting rhymes with his Hebrew style without betraying his West Coast roots. But what is a hit LP without a little controversy? The “Usual Suspects” track takes a jab at Dre, and on “Northwest Funk,” Azarel and crew stab at Charles Barkley: “…talk big shit but never get a ring!” Overall, though, Azarel provides a positive message that is a refreshing alternative to the rappers who promote drugs, sex, money, and violence. Through his jamming beats and creative lyrics, Azarel raises cultural awareness in a way that is rarely seen with the rest of today’s quality hip-hop.
