The term 'generic' has became one of the most used terms in hip-hop with rappers producing carbon copies of each others work. Birdman isn't known for his originality and 'Fast Money' is an appropriate term for this album. Any album which contains the titles 'Ghetto Life', 'Out The Ghetto' and 'Big Pimpin' is going to be nothing but an echo of past clichés and stereotypes. Sadly my prediction is correct, this LP lacks originality both lyrically and sonically. The constant drug, gangsta and female degrading lyrics don't help this albums case at all.
Birdman isn't known for his lyrics, he's known for his business savvy, and I guess this album is just another cash-in for Cash Money with sales going well according to the Nielsen Soundscan. 'Neck of The Woods' is one of the first insults to the ears and isn't helped by adopted son 'Lil' Wayne's drawl. 'Ghetto Life' is one of the album's few shining moments and that's only because of Bun-B's bestowment with Birdman's repetitive subject matter getting boring by the 4th (of 17 tracks). Other abominations include 'Hug Da Block', the drug referencing 'Shovlin' Snow' and the absolutely cringe worthy 'Cash Money Niggas'. Even the Big Tymers reunion on 'We Gettin it On' can't resurrect the album with the gangsta rhetoric and terrible lyrics wearing thin by the 16th track. The
re are three easily identifiable problems with this album;
1) Birdman obviously has nothing worthwhile to say and his constant female bashing and drug slanging centred lyrics grow tiring over an epic 73 minute album.
2) The production is both generic and undefined. It isn't exactly pop and it isn't crunk, it's just stuck in-between the two.
3) These guys don't understand what the word corny means with sickly loops and laughable hooks.
To be honest, this album isn't worth your 10 dollars and I seriously suggest you look elsewhere. If you have already bought this album I feel sorry for you and I offer a heartfelt apology for not offering this warning sooner. If you like this album, well, I feel even more sorry as you must be deaf or mesmerised by the glitz and glamour of mainstream advertising. The album has sparse moments of excellence with Bun-B's verse on 'Ghetto Life' being one of the most easily recognisable. In fact the Bun-B assisted track is the only one worthy of your money so just stick it on your I-Pod and write the rest of this album off. I know generic is over used in hip-hop but it's the only one word definition for this album. Let me just finish by rephrasing an old Co Flow term. Generic as fuck.
i-Pod Worthy : 'Ghetto Life'
Skippable : Everything else
Overall : 1.5 out of 6 Shots, and that's being kind. A serious contender for worst album of the year.
