Ever since 1997, the Wu-Tang Clan hasn’t made much noise in the game. The fickle hip-hop audience largely ignored their last two albums. That coupled with sub par albums by its solo members made it appear that Wu-Tang would lose all relevance. But Ghostface Killah has single handedly kept the Wu-Tang Clan relevant by consistently releasing dope albums, although commercial success has eluded him thus far. He had mild success with the single “Cherchez La Ghost” but it looks like he’ll finally hit mainstream success with the infectious “Tush”.

“You wanna get up in that tush, tush, tush?
Wanna slide in my bush, bush, bush
I’m on top, you like push, push, push
Keep it low like shush, shush, shush” – Tush
After a few listens I guarantee you’ll be singing along to Ghostface and Missy. Thankfully though Tony Starks hasn’t given up his day job, giving us the same sh*t that we all love him for. Ever since his classic “All That I Got is You”, Ghostface has always been able to rhyme with the rawest emotion outside of 2Pac. And we get that emotion in the cuts “Save Me Dear” and the introspective “Love”. Although Kanye West deserves credit for the renaissance of hip-hop soul Ghostface has always been a pioneer in the soul movement, from the Wu classic “Can it be all so Simple” to the excellent Pretty Toney cut “Holler”. But perhaps Ghostface’s greatest attribute has been his storytelling ability. In the RZA produced “Run”, Ghostface and Jadakiss trade such descriptive lyrics that Slick Rick himself would be proud. Additionally on the excellent “It’s Over”, Ghostface rhymes over Biggie’s “I Shot Ya” beat with such precision that you’ll swear you’re right there at the hotel with Pretty Toney as he’s caught cheating on his girl.
“She’s layin’ in the ‘tel lobby, spotted me
Tippin’ the doorman, holdin’ hands with my bitch besides me
My heart drop, everything stops, scared to death…” – It’s Over
As expected Ghostface delivers yet another great album, only this time without much help from his Clan members. But give him credit for expanding as a solo artist while still remaining true to the Wu-Tang sound. And as long as Tony Starks is around, “Wu-Tang Clan ain’t nuthin’ ta F’ Wit”!
