Mention Mississipi to someone living outside the state's boundaries and the first thing most people think of are:extreme poverty and racially motivated violence.David Banner broke the mould when he signed a reported $10 million deal to record five albums with Loud Records founder SteveRifkind. After being dropped from two majors when he was one half of the group Crooked Lettaz, dropping underground albums and producing for cats like Trick Daddy,Pastor Troy and Lil Flip..he is ready to offically to do it big with his album..Mississippi:The Album.
If you haven't been living under a rock..you must have heard his first single and club banger featuring Lil Flip,"Like A Pimp"..where he urges the ballers to "make them guuurrls get dowwwn on the flow"..a far cry frm his social commentaries. If you think David is just your usual down south bootie rapper..think again. On the title track "Mississipi" where he challenges how black folk live and racism..Where the rebel flag still aint burning/New Schools but the black kids ain't learnin'?Crackers only come to buy crack/and cracker cops comeonly to bust nigga who sell that/".
David finds himself in a dilemma on 'Cadillac 22's" where he speaks to God on how he wanna live right but wants to live the good and fast life:
God I know that we pimp/ God I know that we wrong/ God I know why she
talk about Moet all of my songs/ I know these kids are listening/I know I'm here for a mission/ But it's so hard to get 'em wit 22 rims all glisten/ I know these balls are talking Lord I wanna do right/ I tried to fight but these demons they comp at me at night/
Him and Pastor Troy show their loathing for haters on the gritty "Fuck 'Em" and makes it real crunk with the King of Crunk..Lil Jon on the banger "Might Getcha".
Like many other southern artists like Ludacris,Outkast,Goodie Mobb ..David Banner shows versatility and that he knows how to balance his mutliple dimensions and prove sthat Dirty South rap artits have substance and are not all about fried chicken, big booty hoes ,cars and gold teeth. This album is worth it and so was the deal Steve Rifkind made.
