Freeway made his mark with his distinctive voice, unique flow and recognizable beard on cuts like "1-900-Hustler" and the banger "Roc tha Mic".In 2002 he made enough guest apperances on singles and mixtapes to keep his buzz alive. We knew the kid was hot but could he hold an entire album.
Philadelphia Freeway begins with the infectious soul track"Free" produced by Just Blaze.Free couldn't sound any better,as he uses crafty ways to make all bars end with his name..Free!He outshines his mentors,Jay-z & Beanie Sigel on his lead single "What we do'' with his witty delivery and "he aint talking about chicken and gravy mayyyyn."
So that you don't forget he can make a club banger,he hits us up with "Flipside" featuring another new gunner on the ROC..Peedi Crack. He gives us a peep of his lifestyle on 'Hear the Song" and we learn his struggles on "Victim Of The Ghetto" featuring the vocals of Rell.
If you think he cant drop jewels...well..his soulful second single "Alright" featuring the unique crooning of Allen Anthony will get its point across with its positive message and... the diamond in the rough track on the whole album will have to be"Life" featuring Beans which gives us some insight into his fragile morality with lines like:
I still
l managed to make it to the mosque/the bad kid on the block of crack/a package of pills/Ol head Quil tried to teach us the Quaraan/
... just leave you salivating..wishing Freeway would get poetical like a Nas or Common would.
Instead we get hit off with lackluster tracks like"We Get Around"feat Snoop and "All my life "with Nate Dogg.Free is trying to stay gutter and trying to sell some albums by having guest apperances like the annoying"On My Own" feat Nelly and the obviously out of place"You Got me" which sound like..it would have been better off on Mariah's album featuring Jay-Z & Freeway.
Philadelphia Freeway is a good ride interuppted by unnecessary stop overs, but you're left with the feeling after listening to his album that it was supposed to set the industry on fire; instead it will warm things up..just a little !
