Virginia on the map
Since dudes such as Timbaland and Missy, we got to know about Virginia. Brothers Pusha-T and Malice, better known
as the Clipse, are the State’s latest project and product. And they come with the team you gotta have today and now: They are produced by the Neptunes.
The danger is clear: The music outshining the lyrics. And, quite frankly, there’s no new artist or combo on the map that could possibly keep up with their musical background when Chad and Pharrell are doing their thing and in fact executive producing your album, right? That’s also what kinda happened here:
The music, well, read SIXSHOT’s interview with the Clipse, and you’ll see what they say about that type of Neptunes sound: It’s the new type of shit. Do you remember “Grindin’” with that strange hook and this special way of putting down the drums? That’s what this album is about, it’s the Neptunes, but they’re trying new things, experimenting around. So if you are kinda fed up with the everyday, all day Neptunes joints, then try this one, it shows you that Chad and Pharrell are able to do even more. In fact, it’s their only guarantee to stay in this game, ‘cause it prevents them from getting played out.
On the other hand, you got the Clipse who have a very special way of rhyming. It’s a cool flow, but you gotta get used to it. And I still somehow someway hear a certain inconstancy in their stuff. Peep “I’m Not You” with Jadakiss, Styles and Roscoe P. Coldchain, and when Jada opens his lyrics, it’s just still a little more of a bumping car, a bopping head – it’s just perfectly written rhymes. Clipse themselves, they ain’t bad, but I guess the next album will bring out even better flows, and I hope that they ain’t lost fans by then, ‘cause some of the tracks on this record are just unnecessary to the album, and you somehow lose the good feeling you just got due to the track before the one you just listen to.
Nevertheless, the Neptunes beats on their own manage to give you a good feeling listening to this piece, and there are parts of verses and tracks that are definitely superdope. It’s like a fruit: You know that it’s going to become superdelicious, but you just don’t take it off the tree in February, you do that in summer or autumn. You get my point. Peep "Ma I don't love her", "Grindin'", "I'm Not You" and "Gangsta Lean" if you wanna listen to the best tracks on the record!
