As rappers continue to shoot themselves in the foot (metaphorically) with constant run-ins with the law, the entrance to the local courthouse should be replaced with a subway turn style for easier access. Just like the old adage goes: “The more the merrier,” Donald “Baby D” Jenkins joins in the fun, as he finds himself in the same legal predicaments as those that have come before him.

On March 26th of this year, he was arrested in Dayton, Ohio for allegedly trafficking cocaine and to make matters worse, he also faces additional charges (three to be exact) in Tennessee for assault. Amidst of it all, his third album still managed to be released through KOCH Records, A-Town Secret Weapon.

The album starts off with an intro of a woman’s voice putting all the pieces together to make a secret weapon, followed by “U Gotta Love It.” The track does a decent job at standing out, with Baby D rambling on about the happenings in Atlanta. “Big Boy Whips” includes a semi-chopped & screwed hook, and more content about him being a superstar around Atlanta.

Shawty Lo and Gucci Mane help out on “Icey.” The Atlanta trio all do their best to keep the “I’m so icy” fad in style, but their lyricism doesn’t help the effort. “Patron” is self-explanatory, a song about alcohol, and the effects in can have on you when you drink too much; “Hold up, leave yo ass f olded up/leanin’ in the middle of the floor/I promise to God I won’t drink no ‘mo.”

The Atlanta-snap movement comes into play on “Do It.” Even though the production is quite simple, it’s still one of the better tracks on the album, and Baby D slows down his Atlanta-twang to remain on the same page.

The rest of the album contains donations like “Get To It,” “Get It Girl” (feat. Blazed), “One For Tha Money,” and “Girls Gone Wild” (feat. Blazed). If the simplicity of the songs titles doesn’t get to you, then the mediocre content and lyricism is sure to do you in.

In Baby D’s defense, the majority of people don’t listen to Atlanta Hip-Hop to be wowed by metaphors and punch lines, so that’s probably the reason why he thought he could sneak in the back door; and not to put a lot of effort into his craft. But on the other hand, people do listen to Atlanta Hip-Hop for that kick and pop, and his album still falls below the measuring stick when it comes to that aspect. As he continues to be held without bail in Ohio pending his criminal charges, hopefully this life-altering experience will make him become a better writer on his future projects.
